  • Religious Revival or Recession?

The attached article looks at the question of are we going to have a religious revival or recession. It argues both sides and ends up as a recession. https://religionandpolitics.org/2020...ion-recession/ It also implies many churches are going to be closing.

You don't have an option for "both".

Not sure how both could occur.

You don't think that there could be a religious revival during an economic slump? History would disagree.

There were multiple recessions and even a couple of Depressions during what we call the Second Great Awakening (1790-1840 although a few prefer 1795 to 1835). For instance you had the Copper Panic of 1789 which lasted roughly four years and was almost immediately followed by the Panic of 1796-97 and closely followed by the a recession lasting from 1802 to 1804. And these were followed by a three year Depression caused by the Embargo Act of 1807. Then after the end of the Napoleonic Wars we experienced another Depression that took place from 1815 to 1821 (which some historians describe as America's First Great Depression) that peaked during the Panic of 1819. Even after it ended we spent the rest of the 1820s experiencing one recession after another. Finally there were two recessions in the 1830s.

So during the period of the Second Great Revival, we essentially lurched from one recession to another and even had two Depressions to boot.

I think that with all of the troubles in the world, people will turn to God. In times of need, we need God. It's a sad commentary on humanity, but that is how it usually happens.

Read the article again. It's a weird one. I don't think they're talking about an economic recession in the popular sense --- I think it's trying to say that Churches will either grow - or suffer a religious "recession".

              I think that's why there's no "both".

That's my take. I think they picked Recession because it starts with 'R' like Revival.
