DNI runs a big outfit - it's possible somebody in there heard it and didn't pass it on.

Back when I was USAF, we had an outfit at Goodfellow AFB where we had all branches of service represented, along with No Such Agency and other intel agencies, and our job was to compare notes to establish patterns.

Subsequently, that kind of cooperation was poo-pooed. Nobody was allowed to know what others knew.
