Recent poll: what do Americans think of Canada?

A very interesting poll was recently done by the firm Abacus Data for the Canadian publication Maclean's Magazine. Some hilites:

    - 41% of Americans think the US should offer to buy Alberta

    - 41% of Americans name Canada as the US's closest ally (Canada was the highest rated country in the survey)

    - 17% of Americans think they should invade Canada and steal Canada's resources

    - 20% of Americans think a wall should be built between Canada and the US

    - 25% of Americans think US troops should be stationed along the border between the US and Canada

    - 25% of Americans think America has behaved like a bully towards Canada since Trump was elected

    - 41% of Republicans think the US's relationship with Canada has improved since Trump was elected

    - 41% of Democrats think the US's relationship with Canada has worsened since Trump was elected

    - 93% of Trump voters think Trump has done a good job managing US relations with Canada

The same poll asked some questions not directly related to Canada:

    - 60% of Americans think Trump has made America weaker as a nation

    - 66% of Americans don't think America is the leader of the free world

    - 85% of Americans think that the current political environment could lead to a civil war

    - "a majority" (the exact % wasn't given) of Americans think there is a "serious chance" the current political environment could lead to a civil war

Some of those statistics are of questionable value, but I agree with others.

The one thing I can say (as both a defense and an indictment) is that a majority of Americans think the civilized world ends at our borders, which is why we're kinda ignorant about everything outside of it. I wish it were otherwise...

I think most Americans don't know much about Canada and Canadians, eh?

Except that we're all very polite, eh?

    Sorry about this post.

I must be missing something. Alberta? Why that province specifically?

Because of Alberta's oil and gas sector.

Alberta's oil sands alone contain around 165 billion barrels of oil, as opposed to total US oil reserves of around 47 billion barrels.

I have a brother who swears that, around thirty years ago in a bar in Venezuela, where my brother had struck up a conversation with an older American tourist, the American suddenly said: "you speak pretty good American, for a Canadian".

I think Canada has incredibly professional and polite border agents.

A slightly out of date video, but still worth watching:
