I forgive him. But then, I was never scared.

Such great wisdom must be used sparingly; to avoid alarm. I am always up for a chat CP. I hope you are keeping well. I see the cows.

A friend hereabouts has been trapping magpies because they eat the little songbirds. Someone comes to humanely kill them.

On Behalf Of Environmentalists, I Apologize For The Climate Scare

On behalf of environmentalists everywhere, I would like to formally apologize for the climate scare we created over the last 30 years. Climate change is happening. It’s just not the end of the world. It’s not even our most serious environmental problem.

I may seem like a strange person to be saying all of this. I have been a climate activist for 20 years and an environmentalist for 30.

But as an energy expert asked by Congress to provide objective expert testimony, and invited by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to serve as Expert Reviewer of its next Assessment Report, I feel an obligation to apologize for how badly we environmentalists have misled the public.

Here are some facts few people know:

Humans are not causing a “sixth mass extinction”

The Amazon is not “the lungs of the world”

Climate change is not making natural disasters worse

Fires have declined 25% around the world since 2003

The amount of land we use for meat — humankind’s biggest use of land — has declined by an area nearly as large as Alaska

The build-up of wood fuel and more houses near forests, not climate change, explain why there are more, and more dangerous, fires in Australia and California

Carbon emissions are declining in most rich nations and have been declining in Britain, Germany, and France since the mid-1970s

Netherlands became rich not poor while adapting to life below sea level

We produce 25% more food than we need and food surpluses will continue to rise as the world gets hotter

Habitat loss and the direct killing of wild animals are bigger threats to species than climate change

Wood fuel is far worse for people and wildlife than fossil fuels

Preventing future pandemics requires more not less “industrial” agriculture

I know that the above facts will sound like “climate denialism” to many people. But that just shows the power of climate alarmism.

In reality, the above facts come from the best-available scientific studies, including those conducted by or accepted by the IPCC, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and other leading scientific bodies.

Some people will, when they read this imagine that I’m some right-wing anti-environmentalist. I’m not. At 17, I lived in Nicaragua to show solidarity with the Sandinista socialist revolution. At 23 I raised money for Guatemalan women’s cooperatives. In my early 20s I lived in the semi-Amazon doing research with small farmers fighting land invasions. At 26 I helped expose poor conditions at Nike factories in Asia.

I became an environmentalist at 16 when I threw a fundraiser for Rainforest Action Network. At 27 I helped save the last unprotected ancient redwoods in California. In my 30s I advocated renewables and successfully helped persuade the Obama administration to invest $90 billion into them. Over the last few years I helped save enough nuclear plants from being replaced by fossil fuels to prevent a sharp increase in emissions

But until last year, I mostly avoided speaking out against the climate scare. Partly that’s because I was embarrassed. After all, I am as guilty of alarmism as any other environmentalist. For years, I referred to climate change as an “existential” threat to human civilization, and called it a “crisis.”

              But mostly I was scared..................

Has it "dropped to the background"? Certainly it was noted how quickly in some cities air quality improved around the world during lockdown but pollution has increased.

              https://www.theguardian.com/environm...ds-up-in-ocean

And polluters around the world have been using the pandemic to acquire even more cash and to delay environmental protections.

So climate change may have "dropped to the background" for you [and possibly many others who only read the popular press], but it has not gone away.

Pretty much, yeah. COVID and anarchy have pretty much taken all the oxygen out of the "Climate Change" debate.

The OP website seems to be a propaganda site for nuclear power. I am pro nuclear power, but a propaganda website doesn't seem to be an inherently reliable source.

Obviously as a progressive, I both believe in the ability of humanity to rise to challenges, and believe that the world is gradually becoming a better place. Likewise I neither find climate change scary, nor think it will cause an apocalypse. But climate change is clearly real, and clearly a challenge facing humanity, and clearly we need to address it through rational and cooperative international action.

I don't have time to fact-check all the claims he makes (which look quite mixed in plausibility), but a bit of searching for some info on the guy suggests he dropped out of environmentalist movements 20 years ago and has been writing anti-environmentalist pieces since and doesn't have a background in science. I might still read his book though, if I can get a copy, as it seems to cover some interesting topics.

Okay then, let's try for one that's more likely to upset you / make you think.

20 years ago I was a Christian. If I now wrote an article apologising to the world for all the evils of Christianity and admitting how wrong it was about all its key claims, and gave it to you and your fellow Christians here to read, do you think you would take it at all seriously? I don't.

Do you think it's fair to expect a different response when you post something from some random guy, and expect us to take it seriously because he was an environmentalist 20 years ago?

I would say that obviously Covid is killing more people than Climate Change on a daily basis at the moment, so it is clearly the more urgent. If your section is subsiding gradually, you might spend years trying to address that problem, but then if your house is currently burning down, you don't stand inside the burning house discussing how your section has been subsiding over several years. Urgent problems have to take priority.

I did see a climate change article last week though: Noam Chomsky: Trump’s Inaction on Climate Change Makes Him “the Worst Criminal in History, Undeniably”.

You guys don't get it --- It really takes quite a lot to get upset.

I don't think this is gonna be the same. "Christian" can mean a lot of things from "I was born in Church" to "I was gloriously saved by the power of the Spirit".
Lots of people claim to have been Christians.

You don't have to take it seriously - I posted it for conversation because, all of a sudden, "Climate Change" just kinda disappeared from the news.
