Though he wrote these words roughly 150 years ago, how they apply today more than ever:
Yet, we can take comfort in his next verse:
We should be praying that we'll see our Lord's hand in this extra hard time in history, and that He'll use it for His glory and His perfectly good and wise purposes. Although it's difficult to see His hand through one's tears, we can still know it's there even should we struggle between despair and trust in Him.
In despair I bowed my head:
"There is no peace on earth," I said,
"For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of 'Peace on earth, goodwill to men.'"
"There is no peace on earth," I said,
"For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of 'Peace on earth, goodwill to men.'"
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep!
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, goodwill to men."
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep!
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, goodwill to men."
