Bosnia has marked the 25th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre, the only declared genocide in Europe since the second world war, with a small number of survivors in attendance, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The execution in July 1995 of more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys is being commemorated in a series of events. There will also be a reburial of the recently identified remains of nine victims in a memorial cemetery outside the town in eastern Bosnia.

The Srebrenica massacre is the only episode of Bosnia’s 1992-95 war to be defined as genocide. After murdering thousands of Srebrenica’s Muslims, Serbs dumped their bodies in numerous mass graves scattered throughout eastern Bosnia, in an attempt to hide the crime.

Body parts are still being found in mass graves and are being put together and identified through DNA analysis. Almost 7,000 of those killed have been found and identified.

Newly identified victims are buried each year on 11 July, the anniversary of the day the killing began in 1995.

Thanks. I had't forgotten that war, but it's good to be reminded about it.

Puts the pandemic in a different perspective, too.

Doesn't 9/11 posts then also belong in History? To be honest while I understand the point of the many sub-forums, I think they make more sense on a forum with say ten times the number of active members.

Really? You must be quite young then. As a young woman living through it the years from 1984 through to 1996 witnessed some of the most awful global horrors. We had the Ethiopian famine that precipitated the Live Aid concert of 1985 [the 35th anniversary of that global juke-box is tomorrow], then there was the first Gulf War and the misery that caused, the Hutu genocide of the Tutsis in Rwandan in 1994, and all through it the Yugoslavian tensions were simmering before exploding into yet another war with more horror such as this.

I think it is important people remember, or as Leonhard has acknowledged, learn about it. Particularly given the horrors of Yemen and Syria at the moment.

Good point. I also think that Civics 101 is somewhat too USAcentric in its threads. It is almost as if the wider world did not exist.

seer, seriously, do you have to turn any discussion about anything at all into a discussion of the basic ontology of morality?

Well she turned my thread into a theological battle. Besides I'm tired of the moral outrage exhibited by atheists when these things are perfectly natural in their worldview.

Perchance he is simply "doing what animals do, all quite natural.."!

Looking back through your thread you were the first to raise the question of Christian theology at post #48 when you asked "Can you tell me which teachings of Christ they were following? Be specific..." In response to comments about persecuting the Jews etc. I merely pointed out that the persecution of the Jews goes back to texts found in the NT which contain distinct anti-Judaic/Semitic elements.
