The videos are shocking. Bet you it was a warship...but would they have live ammo in a civilian port? Let's see.

Ok...I saw a report it was a storage facility that had ammonium nitrate (?). That would do it....

Firefighters were there before the explosion. Officials are looking for them now...

Reports say Lebanon is in financial crisis as is.

That shock wave was unreal - don't have much hope for those firefighters...

'Horror show': Massive explosion in Beirut kills dozens...

A massive explosion rocked Beirut, Lebanon, with the force of an earthquake followed by a shock wave that caused widespread damage across the capital.

At least 50 people were killed and more than 2,700 wounded, according to Health Minister Hassan Hamad.

The blast followed a fire that broke out in the city's port area, based on multiple videos from the scene.

While the cause of the explosion was yet to be officially determined, Abbas Ibrahim, chief of Lebanese General Security, said it might have been caused by highly explosive material that was confiscated from a ship that was being stored at the port. Local television channel LBC said the material was sodium nitrate.

Israel, which has seen years of intermittent conflict with Lebanon, quickly denied any involvement. An Israeli government official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter with the media, told the Associated Press that Israel “had nothing to do” with the blast.

I think we can cautiously believe the State of Israel on that one, there doesn't seem to be any strategic interest in them doing something like this.

I thought so, as well. There have not been ongoing hostilities between Israel and Lebanon.

Can't find it now, but there was a reporter claiming a car bomb. Most of the reports are saying that there were dangerous explosives stored in a warehouse that finally blew.

Many years ago I witnessed an explosion that was in plain view of my house - and as it turned out, very very close to our unique Marine Mounted Color Guard stables (thanks to a very fast-thinking Marine, all the horses were saved). The explosions came from cylinders of various compressed gases that were improperly stored. They were launched into the air from a fire that came from chemicals that shouldn't have been there either. People got into a lot of trouble for the incident which got maybe 60 seconds of fame on the national news.

I've certainly never seen video of an explosion like this, even on WWII combat documentaries.

No, I don't have much hope for firefighters. At least it was quick.

This morning I saw a death count of 100 with 100's missing. I'm guessing this will hit 1,000 dead by the end.

Trivia: as I recall, ammonium nitrate was used in the bomb in Oklahoma City. Obviously this was a lot more than what could be loaded in the back of a U-Haul.

This is probably outdated info (they have now placed officials under house arrest) but Trump says he was told it was probably a bomb.

If it was a bomb it might have been a bomb planted near ammonium nitrate storage. However it could also just be a fire. Let's see what the investigations turn up.

When I was a teenager a whole fireworks factory factory exploded five miles from where we lived. It gave off that white shockwave plume people describe in the video, it is just hard to see because these are videos from 2004 and phone cameras weren't as good back then.
