Trump Signs Executive Orders: Extends Federal Unemployment Benefits *At $300 Per Week, Protects Against Evictions, Defers Student Loan Payments, Suspends Payroll Tax

With White House officials and Democratic leaders at an impasse over a coronavirus stimulus package, President Trump signed four executive orders Saturday at a press conference from his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The legality of the executive actions is unclear as Congress, and not the President controls federal spending; however, Trump said he is “not at all” worried about this. The Trump administration will try to re-purpose up to $140 billion including $80 billion from money that hasn’t been spend from the CARES Act as well as $44 billion from the Disaster Relief Fund.

The four executive actions relate to unemployment benefits, payroll taxes, rental foreclosures, and student loans...

The interesting one (for me) is the "payroll tax holiday." It means people earning less than $104,000 per year will not have payroll taxes deducted from their paychecks from September through the end of the year. I'm definitely on board with tax reductions. The only problem here is that an executive order bypasses the congressional duty to balance income and expenditures.

In any case, 2020 is a year that will have reverberations for this country for decades to come. All of these stimulus measures may only result in hyper inflation for future generations.

(* some sources say $400 for unemployment)

There are serious questions as to how much of this is actually going to survive the impending court case.

It's just a deferment not a tax reduction - you can choose to delay paying the tax bill til a later time but you still owe it. Doesn't seem likely it will be used much, as being saddled with twice the normal tax bill at a later date is no one's idea of a good time.

Probably still a politically-savvy move by the Trump administration, despite the illegality of the executive order. As it makes Trump look like someone who wants to give people good things and Dems look like the ones who are against it, so it distracts from the Republican Senators getting hated-on for not passing another relief/stimulus bill.

I'm banking that he is going to win in November. Then it will be a reduction.

"Trump said he would forgive the delayed payroll taxes if re-elected and make the payroll tax holiday permanent.

The IRS is under the executive branch, so the President is well within his authority to suspend tax collections.

Why would you cheer on something you would find a reason to be angry about if a democrat did it. I don't think this kind of sidestepping of congress is wise. We have checks and balances for a reason and every time a president uses "executive privilege" It's never ended well

I'm not cheering anything on. I simply stated a fact. This plan will only really work if Congress drastically reduced spending to balance the President's check, but we know that won't happen.

If "permanent," what will replace it in funding Social Security?

Don't know. But with the massive debt the government is already carrying, they don't really have money to spend on anything anyway. They'll just print more money and stick it to our children and grandchildren with hyperinflation.

Agreed, but only in the sense of a "broken clock" being right twice a day. He's bound to accidentally do something in his own administration's interests, from time to time.

All congress has to do is get off the pot and pass the legislation then Trump can cancel his executive orders.
