Nudity On TV. OK or Not?
Jimmy Higgins' poll on the "F" word and smoking on TV got me to thinking about nudity on the tube.
I remember when one of the networks showed Shindler's List completely uncut, with scenes of men and women completely naked: full frontal nudity. Naturally the show was preceded with a warning, and I don't recall reading any negative publicity about the airing. So, evidently the viewing public can handle full nudity on the tube without the country disintegrating or thousands succumbing to desires of the flesh.
And recently more and more shows have been allowed to show nudity or partial nudity from the back--the movie, As Good as it Gets came pretty close. The movie also showed nearly naked breasts from the front--Helen Hunt's wet T-shirt hid very little. It also showed her naked breasts from the side. In another show (don't remember which) a young woman was facing the camera, naked from the waist up, with only her fingers covering her nipples. Evidently it won't be long until T-shirts get the heave-ho, and fingers will be occupied doing other things.
Hence the poll.

I will not vote on that because it depends on the nature of nudity if it is sexual or not...

I don't think nudity is the issue, but rather eroticism. Schindler's List contained nudity, where none of it was meant to be erotic. Nudity on television should be allowed, but its got to have purpose. It needs to be real. Otherwise, its just a cheap attempt at ratings.I remember when one of the networks showed Shindler's List completely uncut, with scenes of men and women completely naked: full frontal nudity. I tell you, the one thing that Fox's 24 shows you, there doesn't have to be graphic language and sex to sell a hardcore action television show.
Well, so didn't Kathleen Turner's wet shirt in War of the Roses. Silver screen nudity isn't too new. I tell ya, though, nothing ruins a great action film like a love scene... atleast in my opinion. If I want to see sex, there is a mode of media for that. The action film ain't it!And recently more and more shows have been allowed to show nudity or partial nudity from the back--the movie, As Good as it Gets came pretty close. One thing I do want to see is the end of censoring movies on television. You either show it, or you don't. I'm sick of language being changed and scenes being deleted. All or nothing!

March 30th 2004, 09:45 PM #4I'm with ya there, I think it is dependent on circumstances. And besides, I'm still debating it in terms of "censoring promotes interest/devience of desire resulting in unhealthy lust" vs there is a morality that must be upheld-type arguments

For broadcast TV it depends on the context in which the the nudity occurs, and it should be restricted to later hours when children are less likely to be viewing.

p.s. As a movie fanatic, I also hate censored movies. I understand why networks do it, and the deletions are acceptable in many cases, but like to watch the original if it's available. You can build a prototype by the book, but a legend you build by the seat of your pants.

I didn't vote becuase there's no option for "full nudity, male or female, OK" which is how I would've voted.
There should be less government regulation of televisions. If people decide that they don't want nudity on TV, they should rally together and boycott the advertisers on the networks that have nudity.

March 30th 2004, 10:35 PM #8I would vote for the complete opposite, depending on the context of the show, but I agree 100% totally that people boycotting is much better than petitioning the government to get involved.

Of course, doing this brings condemnations of "PRUDES!!!" and bellows of "STOP FORCING YOUR MORALITY ON THE REST OF US!!!" from those who probably think hardcore porn should be standard primetime programming. I don't think we need to be reducing women to being sex objects any more than they already are. Women are people, too. They should be treated as such.

Jinx72 and Ru-Tang,
I agree wholeheartedly. I too am a member of onemilliondads.com. I think Don Wildmon and the AFA (American Family Association) has done a great service for Christians and families everywhere.
