Public school sex abuse said worse than Catholic scandal

Between six and ten percent? That's insanity. In an average class of 30 students, that means about 2 or 3 have been sexually abused. If it's true, that's very sad... I think the reason more people are shocked with the Catholic priest molestation, though, is the inherent irony therein. A priest should be the exact opposite of a child molestor, and besides molesting, he's also preaching morals to people.
The rain, it started tapping on the window near my bed.
There was a loophole in my dreaming, so I got out of it.
And to my surprise my eyes were wide and already open.

Okay, if we're including unwanted sexual remarks then no wonder it's so high up there. I never encountered or heard of any such thing, and unlike the rest of you old farts it hasn't been terribly long since I escaped from the Alcatrazesque institution. Are we speaking of the total number of complaints filed, or are we speaking strictly of fully substantiated reports?

She [Shakeshaft] estimates that 9.6 percent of all students in grades 8-11 reported sexual harassment by teachers, coaches, or other school employees. That included sexual remarks, jokes or gestures. About 6.7 percent of students reported harassment involving physical contact. The value and naturalness of homosexuality must be as scientifically clear as the fact that the earth is round. 6.7% for actualy physical contact is ridiculous. I really find that very hard to believe, but I suppose if it is true then it is all beneath the surface of the pleasant facade.

My high school was a living hell, and I graduated in 1986. (yeah, it's been awhile!) I was never abused by teachers although I think a few of them were mental or worse (who wouldn't be mental working in such a hell hole)...but fellow students is a whole different story!
Let's see:
Used prophylactic placed in my book bag...ewwwww
Gratuitous grabbing at private areas (backside and chest area) in the hallway almost daily
Filthy graffiti w/ sexual overtones painted on my car, twice, in the school parking lot
Filthy comments and requests for oral and/or group sex, almost daily
Today that would be called "sexual harassment" but back then it was called "boys will be boys."
One of the wrestling coaches at my high school got fired for getting a cheerleader pregnant- she got an abortion and he got a job in another state. The RCC aren't the only ones who have covered up their indiscretions in such a way."Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. April 6th 2004, 11:29 AM #8You don't think teachers preach morals?

You don't think teachers should be the exact opposite of a child molester? If anything, teachers should be held to a higher standard than priests as they have greater access to more children.

Female - ChristianSometimes I wonder
Yeah, I wonder if some of my high school teachers were convicted felons, and if they weren't was it only because they weren't caught?

In all fairness though, I had some excellent and inspired teachers as well as a few self-professed draft dodgers and just plain psychos.
Unfortunately in public schools in Ohio a teacher who has been there a few years can't be fired save by committing a felony. (thank our forced unionism laws for that...but I digress) So the mediocre and poor teachers have just as much job security as the excellent ones. It makes me sad that the better ones are not rewarded for their excellence."Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed" - Psalm 139:16 (NRSV)

April 6th 2004, 12:39 PM #12Why not? By and large, priests have far less access to far less children than do teachers. And if this report says anything, it says I'm right on this point.

April 6th 2004, 12:44 PM #13I guess, in light of that observation, Jinx, they must try harder.

April 6th 2004, 12:45 PM #14The number of children they havae access to should be besides the point Jinx. Priests are seen as representatives of God on Earth, teachers are not, therefore they should behave in such a way that glorifies God in every single way instead of bringing shame to His Glorious Name. Priests are supposed to be celibate to begin with. Do you get the point???

April 6th 2004, 01:01 PM #15No, actually, it's not. Greater access to more children = greater chance for abuse.

Are they? So they are the same as angels, then?Priests are seen as representatives of God on Earth,
Indeed. Teachers aren't even expected to follow the Bible. All the more reason to hold them to a higher standard.teachers are not,
Again, teachers aren't expected to believe in or follow such a thing from day one, so again, more reason for hold them to a higher standard.therefore they should behave in such a way that glorifies God in every single way instead of bringing shame to His Glorious Name.
And teachers are supposed to not sexually abuse their students.Priests are supposed to be celibate to begin with.
