The ancient path...
Today, if you find yourself walking the long road of hopelessness, or if it seems as though there’s no place to go then Jeremiah has a message for you. This is what the Lord says: Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. (Jeremiah 6:16 NIV*)
When I first became acquainted with Jeremiah’s counsel I was immediately “caught up in his words” and followed his advice yet a couple of things haunted me. What is the ancient path and where can I find it?
The answer didn’t come over night but it did come, “This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may life and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life…” (Deuteronomy 30:19 - 30:20 *NIV)
In many ways ancient path is the road that leads back to the Garden of Eden where Adam and Eve once walked and talked to God to borrow words from Darth Vader, “That is your destiny.” When Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden God slammed and locked the gate behind them and it wasn’t until Jesus died on the cross and walked from the tomb until the gate was once again open.
When I find myself standing at the crossroads Jeremiah was talking about I see Jesus standing in front of me with his hand extended saying, “Come follow me.”
I said yes.
Grace and Peace,
Gary
