Biblical Languages 301 Guidelines

This is where we come to delve into the biblical text. Theology is not our foremost thought, but we realize it is something that will be dealt with in nearly every conversation. Feel free to use the original languages to make your point (meaning Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). This is an exegetical discussion area, so please limit topics to purely biblical ones.

This is not the section for debates between theists and atheists. While a theistic viewpoint is not required for discussion in this area, discussion does presuppose a respect for the integrity of the Biblical text (or the willingness to accept such a presupposition for discussion purposes) and a respect for the integrity of the faith of others and a lack of an agenda to undermine the faith of others.

            • Proverbs 3:24a

              Text (BHS):
              אִם־תִּשְׁכַּב לֹא־תִפְחָד

              Transliteration (Accordance):
              ʾim-tiškaḇ lōʾ-ṯip̱ḥāḏ

              Translation (Waltke):
When you lie down,* you will not dread
*The LXX reads "when you sit down" (< tēšēb), followed by the NRSV and many others. Its difference from MT's tškb ("lie down") is slight, and it offers a nice progression of movement from "walk" ( verse 23a) to "sit" (verse 24a) to "lie down" (verse 24b). However, one is more likely to dread when lying down than sitting down. The similarity in form between k and b more likely caused haplography in the LXX than the addition of k by dittography. škb has a wide range of meaning, from "to lie down" (cf. 1 K. 3:19), to "retire to bed" (1 Sam. 3:3), to "lie down and sleep" (Gen. 28:11), allowing its repetition here in different senses.

Glossary & Analysis (meanings in this context):
              אִם (ʾim) : hypothetical particle : if.
              תִּשְׁכַּב (tiškaḇ) : Qal imperfect 2 m.s. of שָׁכַב (šāḵaḇ) : you lie down.
              לֹא־תִפְחָד (lōʾ-ṯip̱ḥāḏ) : negation לֹא (lōʾ) + Qal imperfect 2 m.s of פָּחַד (pāḥaḏ) : you will not dread.
