Biblical Languages 301 Guidelines

This is where we come to delve into the biblical text. Theology is not our foremost thought, but we realize it is something that will be dealt with in nearly every conversation. Feel free to use the original languages to make your point (meaning Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). This is an exegetical discussion area, so please limit topics to purely biblical ones.

This is not the section for debates between theists and atheists. While a theistic viewpoint is not required for discussion in this area, discussion does presuppose a respect for the integrity of the Biblical text (or the willingness to accept such a presupposition for discussion purposes) and a respect for the integrity of the faith of others and a lack of an agenda to undermine the faith of others.

                Transliteration (Accordance):

                Translation (Waltke):
then he* taught me and said to me
*The LXX reads "those who were speaking and teaching" and changes "my words" to "our words" probably to harmonize the text with the mention of both parents in verse 3. The narrative waw-consecutive is best not translated after the temporal indicators in verse 3 (IBHS, p. 553, §33.2.4).

Glossary & Analysis (meanings in this context):
                וַיֹּרֵנִי (wayyōrēnı̂) : consecutive ו (waw) + Hiphil imperfect 3 m.s. of יָרָה (yārāh) + pronominal 1 c.s. suffix : then he taught me.

                    Translation (Waltke):
                    keep my commands and live*.
*The LXX omits "and live." This could be an MT gloss from 7:2, but the LXX also deletes verses 5a and 7.

Glossary & Analysis (meanings in this context):
                    שְׁמֹר (šᵉmōr) : Qal imperative 2 m.s. of שָׁמַר (šāmar) : keep.

                      Translation (Waltke):
                      Get wisdom! Get insight!*
*LXXBis minus verses 5a and 7, thereby presenting a more simple text to heed the parental teaching. Other Greek traditions added the MT in various ways. "Do not forsake her" requires an antecedent reference to wisdom.

Glossary & Analysis (meanings in this context):
                      קְנֵה (qᵉnêh) : Qal imperative 2 m.s. of קָנָה (qānāh) : get, acquire.
                      חָכְמָה (ḥoḵmâ) : wisdom.
