Biblical Languages 301 Guidelines

This is where we come to delve into the biblical text. Theology is not our foremost thought, but we realize it is something that will be dealt with in nearly every conversation. Feel free to use the original languages to make your point (meaning Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). This is an exegetical discussion area, so please limit topics to purely biblical ones.

This is not the section for debates between theists and atheists. While a theistic viewpoint is not required for discussion in this area, discussion does presuppose a respect for the integrity of the Biblical text (or the willingness to accept such a presupposition for discussion purposes) and a respect for the integrity of the faith of others and a lack of an agenda to undermine the faith of others.

          Translation (Waltke):
So do this,* my son, and** deliver yourself***
*A. J. Baumgartner (...) comments that in the presence of numerous textual variations in the ancient versions, it is easy to see that the MT [Hebrew] is the more correct and more pure.
**The first imperative functions as a condition; the second states the consequences involved (GKC #325, 110f).
***The Hiphil nāṣal designates the taking away or freeing someone or something from all sorts of situations where one is held fast. With this verb the Niphal functions as the passive/reflexive stem of the Hiphil (IBHSNiphal combines the reflexive notion with the notion of allowing an agent, in this case the debtor, to effect upon the subject the action denoted by the verb. It also involves an element of efficacy: what the subject allows to happen can indeed be carried through (IBHS

KBL2 (p. 723, s.v. ʿap̱ʿap̱ayim) said that it meant rather "glance," and that translation is found in the same English versions here. HALOT (...) however renders it "eyelashes." M. H. Pope (...) cites a Ugaritic parallel where the ʿp̱ʿp̱y(m) are described as bowls made of some sort of precious stone. M. Dahood (...) cites a Qumran text where the ʿp̱ʿp̱ see, Eyeballs, glossed as "pupils" seems the best guess.
