Cain vs Abel
Did A/E have any children before Cain and Abel?
or when Abel died and they had Seth.. was he #3?
Genesis says that Eve said: "God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him."
does this mean Seth was their third child?
It says that had lots of children at some point.. but do you think these were the first 3? and if not, why weren't other children mentioned?“Knowledge is experience. Everything else is just information.“

Re: Cain vs Abel
Jayrok I think Seth was a replacement for Abel but was not number 3.

Re: Cain vs Abel
I know he replaced Abel but how do you know he wasn't #3? Eve said he was given to her to replace Abel. If she had other sons, why would she specifically talk about Seth replacing him?

Re: Cain vs Abel
Cain and Abel must have been adults when Cain killed Abel. Seth was then born after Abel's death. It would be natural to think of Seth as a replacement for Abel no matter how many children were in between. Perhaps they had had a bunch of girls in between and Seth was son # 3 but not child #3. My own opinion is that he was just born after the death of Abel and that's why he was seen as replacement and that between Cain and Abel and Seth A+E had had a mix of children - boys and girls

She said another child to replace abel, not just a son.. Could that mean that when Cain killed Abel, he was the only child until Eve had another "child" to replace Abel, who Cain killed? maybe seth was #3?“Knowledge is experience. Everything else is just information.“

Re: Cain vs Abel
Jayrok how did they go about preventing pregnancies in the interum. Adam was obviously able to sire and Eve too was fertile so surely it's more logical to think they had children in the interum.
I think you also have to consider that maybe Eve was inspired of the Spirit when she made that statement.Last edited by Abigail; June 23rd 2004 at 11:13 PM.

Re: Cain vs Abel
The main point of the replacement is not whether he was number three or not; that is why the Bible is not specific about it. The main point is that God has a llineage of the righteous, from whom the Messiah would come from, and after Abel- the first righteous -was killed by Cain, which was "of that wicked one" - I John 3:12, God gave them Seth to protect the lineage. Notice the genealogy in Gen 5, where it is traced down all the way to Noah.

Re: Cain vs Abel
so if this is the case, then once Abel died, the only male son left was Cain.. if Seth was born to protect the "lineage".. There must not have been any more boys around other than Cain.. right? maybe she had a bunch of Girls... and Cain..

Re: Cain vs Abel
so none of the other kids were righteous?

is it not safe to say that these 3, if not the first 3, were some of the first children? How many kids do you think Eve had between the garden exit and Abel's murder?“Knowledge is experience. Everything else is just information.“

Re: Cain vs Abel
righteous or maybe 'set aside by God', I dont quite know, but it does seem through the scripture that God has chosen certain people through which to bring His will to fruition.

I suppose you could count the years from when they left the garden 'til Abel was murdered and theoretically she could have had one a year. I dont know how she would have prevented having at least a good few between Cain/Abel and Seth, so I highly doubt Seth was #3

Re: Cain vs Abel
How many years was it from the garden exit til Abel was murdered? I don't think it says in the bible.

ok, so we can say she had a few.. 3 or so.. Maybe she had 7 kids.. maybe one of those kids had a baby or two before Cain killed Abel. Even though she had it with a brother or even Adam.. I won't argue that because someone had to father those babies of Eve.. I'm not concerned with Incest with eve's children, because I would be willing to accept that because sin was still new, the blood of those people were still pretty pure and acceptable to sleep with each other.. At least that is what I used to say in defense of "who was Cain's wife"!!
Let's say a few kids, maybe 7... That sound about right?“Knowledge is experience. Everything else is just information.“

Re: Cain vs Abel
No, I would have said there were a lot more children than 7. Seth was born after Adam had lived 130 years. How long had Adam been alive when he had Cain - it doesnt say (unless I've missed it) so could have been anything from soon after being turfed out the Garden. Even if he only had Cain 30 years after his creation that would still leave 100 years of potentially fathering other kiddos (with Eve) before having Seth.
