      Explain this to me...

Why is it that people continue to use a product that its own manufacturer admits significantly increases the incidence of cancer?

Phillip Morris is advertising on TV the aspects of its website showing how to stop using their product, and telling us that its product causes cancer.

How are they still in business? Are people that stupid?

I don't think it's a question of how stupid people are, any more than wondering how stupid someone must be to believe that they will live eternaly.

There are several reasons why people start smoking, but I get the feeling you aren't interested in that. I can speak for myself on this one, in that the reason I started smoking was simply because I enjoyed the act of smoking and believed that I wouldn't get addicted. No, it wasn't peer pressure, because for the first couple years I would actually go out of my way to avoid being seen when I smoked. It was a secret to a lot of people for a long time. Why do I still smoke? First, I am addicted. It's the only addiction that I haven't conquered, and I've had my share of addictions. Second, I still enjoy smoking, what can I say? I like it. Third, I believe that one day I will quit.

I think my reasons are the general reasons why people continue to smoke. Nicotine addiction is an overwhelming force that you are obviously ignorant of, and thankfully so. I would compare it to the depression of a manic - it's your little friend that gets you through the day, but you hate it nonetheless.

While we're on the subject, did you ever stop and ask yourself what other types of ads Philip Morris runs? Have you ever considered the fact that advertisers study psychology and create ads that implant artificial desires in people's heads, so that people like myself can't wait to run out and by a pack on their 18th birthday? It seems like you'd give credit to an abusive parent for warning his kid before he smacks him.

Once you're addicted, you keep taking the substance to stop feeling bad rather than to start feeling good. Nicotine addiction is a hideous thing to try to beat.

What finally worked for me - a complete change of scene. Break the habit of buying tobacco by not going to the places you habitually buy tobacco. A new place also has a lot fewer of the cues that prompt you to light up. And stay away from the sorts of places you tend to smoke.

"It is simply an insult to those who came before us and sacrificed so much on our behalf to imply that we have more to be fearful of than they. Yet they faithfully protected our freedoms and now it is up to us to do the same." - Al Gore

I buy from the gas station and smoke in my car and my back porch. Woe is me.

Why do people do drugs when it can kill them if they overdose (like so many famous people we've all heard of)?
Why do people do cocaine, crack, heroin, ecstacy, etc.?
Why do people drink alcohol in excess?
Why do people eat McDonalds food?

O noble Virgin, truly you are greater than any other greatness. For who is your equal in greatness, O dwelling place of God the Word? To whom among all creatures shall I compare you, O Virgin? You are greater than them all O Covenant, clothed with purity instead of gold! I have these really weird attacks when I try to stop. Like anxiety attacks really bad. I'll flip out really bad- I feel like my body is going haywire, like getting ready to turn inside out and stuff. It's weird.

What did I do? McDonalds food is definitely not good for you and the only thing that can explain why so many people continue to eat it - even though it is so disgusting - is addiction.
