Saints Joachim and Anne, parents of Mary
Matthew 13: 31-35
Jesus proposed another parable to his disciples. "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field. It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the ´birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.´" He spoke to them another parable. "The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened." All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables. He spoke to them only in parables, to fulfill what had been said through the prophet: "I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation (of the world)."
Introductory Prayer:Lord you took the time to explain great mysteries to us in such simple ways. Help my faith in you and my hope in your action in my life. I believe that you want the best for me. I trust in your care. I love you for all the good that do for me. I promise that I will plant the seeds and mix in the yeast.
Petition:Lord Jesus, grant me the strength to do my little part in the whole miracle of grace that you perform in my life.
1. Coming down to our level God is so good! In a way the message of the Gospel is so easy to understand, but in a way it is so foreign and hard to grasp. Christ’s pedagogy is so perfect. He presents the message by means of clearly understood situations: a seed growing into a tree, dough laid out to rise. What was hidden was how the kingdom of heaven grows in the heart of a person and within a society. The seed becoming a tree and the dough rising are daily and common miracles. The kingdom of heaven is a miracle of grace in our lives––but one that can be just as common as the leavened dough and the seed.
2. Plant the seed For a mustard seed to grow it needs to be planted. We have to do our little part for God’s grace to enter our lives. At times, the part that we have can seems so costly. We need to think about how much of a return we get for that little effort. Take for example the effort to go to the sacrament of reconciliation. We drive to the parish, stand in line for 10 minutes (if that), speak with the priest and perform our penance afterwards. What does God do? He takes our soul from a state of death to new life––from a soul that would spend eternity away from its destined heaven, to a soul that is healed and restored to the beautiful state of grace. God’s part is the significant part. Look in the gospels at all the people that are healed physically by Christ. What gratitude they have for a life-changing miracle! How grateful am I to Our Lord for the miracle of grace in my life?
3. The birds of the sky come and dwell The gospel message is not just all about you. If we were to save our souls and present ourselves to St Peter at the gates of heaven, he would look behind us and ask where all the others were. “Who did you bring with you?” If we let the life of God grow in our souls we will experience a tremendous peace and serenity. This peace radiates. So many people today do not have that kind of peace in their souls and they want it badly: “What do you have?” “I want it!” As Jesus said to the first disciples, we need to say to others: “Come and see.” The peace in our souls will be a refuge that these souls will flock to. We will be an occasion of conversion of heart for others. Plant the seed and let the tree grow, and souls will come to you.
Dialogue with Christ: Jesus, you never cease to do good in my life. You are as present and active in our lives now as you were 2000 years ago. The Holy Spirit directs the Church and souls towards you. I want to do my part in saving my soul and the souls of others. So often my pride, my vanity and my laziness get in the way of your grace. Please keep them under control and do not allow me to be a hindrance to you. I love you Lord and I want to be with you. Life with you is so good. Life without you is insipid. Lord, make my love fruitful for the world.
Resolution: I will make the effort today to help at least one other person come to know a little more how much God loves them. This will be through my words or at least through the power of my example. It could be one of my children, a coworker, a friend or a family member.

But being sentimentalists they feel bound to simper and coo over the word "love." They insist on talking about Birth Control when they mean less birth and no control. We could smash them to atoms, if we could be as indecent in our language as they are immoral in their conclusions." (G.K. Chesterton, "Obstinate Orthodoxy," The Thing)
