Sad news. I also enjoyed his more serious roles. He was great in One Hour Photo and Insomnia. R.I.P. Mr. Williams.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." ― C.S. Lewis, God in the Dock: Essays on Theology (Making of Modern Theology)

Robin Williams Suffered From severe Mental Illness. its called Bipolar Disorder. Its perhaps one of the most dangerous disorders to have in terms of self inflicted violence and suicide attempts, especially during the depressive phases. Its unknown what triggers the highs and the lows, but its depressive phases can be so extremely severe that a person can be unable to function normally, or the depression features psychosis and suicidal tendencies. Its not selfishness, or monetary its very chemical. It can be a very intense crisis and if they don't let someone know how intense or severe or don't have a safety plan in place then its very deadly.

With Robin Williams it seems much less a disorder than a personality description. The video above is the most instructive-the primary inspirations for Jonathan Winters were the much more subdued everyday working-class characters he grew up with, and also the much more subdued people in popular entertainment at the time, whereas Robin Williams...made his entire career in San Francisco, Hollywood, and various other California power centers, which means that his primary sources of inspiration were the over-the-top personalities found therein, and their much more rarefied forms of entertainment, and why even in a film like Aladdin you're struggling to keep track of who exactly he's doing an impression of half the time.

"Bipolar" is stretching a functional guy a bit too far into standard psychological categories to really apply here (and how much are you going to trust a DSM that can't call homosexuality the disorder that is is?) I'd rather take him at his word:

While he attributed the recent suicide of novelist Jerzy Kosiński to his fear of becoming an uncreative "vegetable," afraid of losing his sharpness, Williams felt he could overcome those risks.
Nah. Lightning can strike twice in the same place, but that's not the way to bet. And planning your life around your keeping all of the charms, contacts, energy, financial acumen, people-pleasing ability, and fresh routines possible is a fool's game even for the greatest of celebrities. He committed suicide precisely because he had mentally committed himself to a physically unachievable goal, having never taken the natural deterioration of his own faculties into account.

It's as elementary as arithmetic, and needs to be learned early and often to gain the proper perspective on life's various choices. It has nothing to do with abnormal psychology and everything to do with actively denying human nature and society, which is a theme I may have touched on from time to time. Whether simply being metaphorically suicidal or finally ending in suicide, its temptations can strike even the best of us.
