      Yoga and Supernatural Experiences

I am doing research on the relationship between practicing various forms of yoga and having supernatural experiences. I was curious to know if anyone either 1. knew someone who had a supernatural experience while practicing a form of yoga or 2. if they themselves have ever had a supernatural experience while practicing yoga.

I am looking forward to seeing your comments.

How about folks who practiced yoga and didn't have a spiritual experience???

      Like ME...

In hind sight, it could have been because my instructor was a Christian.

      Hi Xavier,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I have actually read about many people who have not had any spiritual experiences while practicing yoga for purely exercise reasons. However, I have read about gurus in India who have indeed had spiritual experiences while practicing yoga, and I am curious to find out if these experiences still occur today.

In hind sight, it could have been because my instructor was a Christian.
      That is possible.

      Thanks again for your comments.

i've not been a regular student of yoga (although i will begin tomorrow, as i've signed up for 4 classes/wk). so i'll keep you posted...

however, i have had spiritual experiences with qi gong--but i don't suppose this would apply to your research...would it?

That would be great. I am looking forward to learning about your experiences.

Although it would not necessarily apply to my research, I am still interested in learning about your spiritual experiences with qi gong.

      Kindest regards,

      Chris

I am not sure of "spiritual" experiences, but I did yoga for a short time, and I did experience a sense of euphoria. Of course that is most likely from the exercise, and the relaxation from my muscles. After doing, even for a short time, I slept better and was more able to do the sporting events I was in.

      Re: Yoga and Supernatural Experiences

I've been practicing dream yoga for about 20 years, but I only found out it had a name about ten years ago. So I guess I was self-taught.

What are my experiences with it and how has it changed my world view? That might take a while to answer; give me a bit and I'll come up with something. In a nutshell, though, I'm not sure whether dream yoga changed my worldview, or my changing worldview brought on the dream yoga, but suffice it to say that my explorations in lucid dreaming were transforming into an exploration of self-awareness, consciousness, and transcendence. In a sense, LD'ing had become a tool rather than an end in itself, and that new end, or new goal, became what is best described as dream and, ultimately, sleep yoga.

You've chosen a good book to read, I think, as it is as clear on this subject as a book can be (though it does lose its way a bit, perhaps intentionally, in the sleep yoga section).

I'm glad you started this thread, Hermine, as this is something that definitely should be talked about here, and it seems to be regularly ignored in favor of the latest "techniques."
