GPL question, software search, and spyware question
According to the GPL liscense you have to release any changes to the source code back to the community. Does that mean that if I were using a game engine I would have to release the source code, or would I only have to release it if I changed some of the functions (for example, added support for environment mapping)?
Also, does anyone know of a free program to allow you to resume downloads? I use to use GoZilla, but not only it was shareware, it came bundled with Gator. If I used adaware to remove Gator GoZilla would quit working.
For those of you who don't know about Gator, it is a very annoying piece of spyware. I didn't have any operating problems while using it, but I don't like the idea of my information being collected for marketing purposes, especially if it's a necessary part of the software I may eventually register.
If I never use the Yahoo search engine and I keep getting adds in the comics section of Yahoo based on what I searched for on Google does that mean I have spyware installed?
I use Google for all of my searches, but when I click an individual comic from My Yahoo it includes adds pertaining to my google searches, such as anime videos (presumeably from my searches for anime reference pictures for modelling) and art supplies (I assume it was from my searches for head shots).Last edited by Tobias Reiper; October 4th 2004 at 03:40 PM. I forgot about getright. Thanks.
2.9 megs? On a 26.4k dialup connection I'm gonna have to download a download manager so I can download a download manager.I am a firm believer in gun control. As a matter of fact, I'm on the range every chance I get to improve my ability to control my gun.

Re: GPL question, software search, and spyware question
26.4k dialup connection? I am sorry to hear about that. I remember the frustrations of sharing a 56k connection with my brother. If you can afford it, a cable internet connection is so worth it, especially if you enjoy downloading stuff, or play PC games. It also makes downloading updates quick and painless. I could not imagine downloading Windows XP SP2 on a 26.4 connection. I think I would opt to order it on CD, and hey, it might arrive by mail before it would finish downloading!

Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe." - NKJV

Re: GPL question, software search, and spyware question
i suspect it would be only if you modified the source, as it should be available elsewhere. but, you might want to see if you can find a lawyer versed in Open Source.

Re: GPL question, software search, and spyware question
strange thing is, at one point i had about a 700KB/s throughput.
i don't think that should be possible even on my connection.

I can't seem to get getright to work. It won't capture any links, and if I use the option to enter a url to download from it won't do anything.

Re: GPL question, software search, and spyware question
Mozilla/Netscape/Internet Explorer all resume downloads if the site supports that. Also, the GPL license requires you to release the source code for any modifications, but it doesn't (seem to) require you to release the source code for GPL products that you used, if you didn't modify it. But it does require you to GPL your product, if you use GPL software. Unless you used software that has the "lesser general public license." But I'm not a lawyer, so I may be wrong. But I might be rite. Such fun.

Re: GPL question, software search, and spyware question
Yes you would have to release the source, because the GPL also stipulates that any deritives(don't chew on my spelling) must be released under the GPL as well. Now if the code was licensed under the LGPL(lesser GPL) you can get away with releasing the code only if it was modified. The only way you can do what you want without releasing the source is if you get code licensed under the LGPL or a BSD-style license.(which, iirc, allows you to modify the code and not release it so long as you give the authors credit)According to the GPL liscense you have to release any changes to the source code back to the community. Does that mean that if I were using a game engine I would have to release the source code, or would I only have to release it if I changed some of the functions (for example, added support for environment mapping)?
Windows bundles some BSD components thanks to this license.
Just a note, $cir is right. -Sparko
