I have had black bear (smoked/BBQ'd) but I have not had brown bear either. I had an uncle who would bbq anything once...

Bear is quite tasty. I have not eaten brown bear, but unless it is eating fish it is supposed to be good.

Like LJ I've had barbecued black bear but don't really remember much about what it tasted like. But it should be noted that a bear is considered an omnivore rather than a carnivore.

Bears are omnivores! They like berries, honey, fish, any food they can get their paws on... which is why you don't want to have food in your tent while camping. The food will attract bears. And the bear may not want to stop at the appetizer...

Back when I used to hunt that was one of the most disappointing things about moving to the deep south. I learned to hunt (deer) by tracking my quarry, stalking it and firing a single precision shot with a high powered rifle but here hunting generally means putting out salt licks, climbing up into a stand about 30' away from your bait and then drinking half a case of beer until the deer (often merely a fawn) gets virtually underneath you and pumping 4 or 5 slugs into it with a shotgun.

I will always associate hunting using a shotgun full of slugs with a bunch of no talent drunken louts.

Bear protection is not hunting. It is simply protection.

Beyond ammo, range is an important factor. You are not protecting yourself from a bear when you fire at long range. At close range a load of double ought will do plenty of damage.
