      Thanks, everybody.

These tragic things are all too commonplace all over the globe. Sometimes we don't notice them, though, until they occur in our own backyard.

Yes, and the "slant" of the story was -- Canada is being hit because she sided with the US on the war on terror, and the bad guys are attempting to peel off our partners like they managed to do with Spain years ago. The bottom line was -- we need to stand with Canada.

Also, I don't know the details of the soldier who was shot in the chest, other than it sounds similar to the honor guard at the tomb of the unknown in DC -- an UNARMED man honoring the fallen is killed.

The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

I didn't hear any news from outside Canada yesterday and am so glad that our allies are standing with us.

And yes, the soldier was on honour guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier, and the shooter then took off for Parliament Hill, which is basically across the street. He actually got inside, where he was killed, which raises huge questions about the security there! He walked right in with a rifle that he made no attempt to hide!

This is one of those cases where we never IMAGINED we'd have to think of "security*" at a place of honor like that. The world is changing SO much. Is it true that Canadian soldiers have been advised to wear civilian clothes to and from work?

(that invokes sad memories of Vietnam soldiers being advised to change into civies before coming home, so they wouldn't get spit on, shouted at, or beaten)

*other than, of course, the appearance of security for order - not for fighting off terrorists

I haven't heard that today, but I haven't spent much time in front of the tv either, yet. And I didn't hear much yesterday as it was Bible study day and I was pretty busy. I know they said last night that the military is to be extra cautious. Which sounds silly, but this is Canada after all.

But think about that --- the military "at home" shouldn't NEED to be "cautious"... they are are among their family and kin and countrymen.... that's why the Fort Hood shooting was so tragic -- they don't carry arms on base, so they're totally vulnerable to somebody else who does.

                It's tragic.

I haven't heard from him in ages. As far as I know he is in Halifax, and don't know what is happening there. I imagine security there is tighter anyway because a large part of the Navy is situated there. Like me, a long way from Ottawa.

I did hear Prime Minister Harper speak last evening.

Have never heard him sound so shaken.

I would LOVE to hear our national leader and know in my heart he was genuine.

I am just watching the opening of the House of Commons right now and they have just sung O Canada. PM is visibly moved, almost weeping.

All the leaders of the parties greeted each other with hugs. Maybe this will bring the country together as never before.

For a time, Moss... 9-11 brought the US together for a time, but how soon we forget.

I know. And I expect it will be short-lived, as we are facing a federal election next year.

One of the local news anchors did a really good editorial about this this morning. It isn't up online yet, but I will try to remember to look tomorrow so I can post it here.

It makes me think -- what must we experience to TRULY come together ... and it's possible that the answer is building in the middle east.
