      TWeb Mix Tape (or CD)

Who would be down for participating in a mix-CD group?

      Here's what I'm thinking.

      1. Everybody who wants to participate in the project sends me a PM.
      2. I send you an FTP address where you can upload one track
      3. Optional: post a little blurb about why you picked that song
      4. I put up a little webpage that has links to all the uploaded songs for people to download and burn.

This way, I get to hear all these crazy bands some of you guys talk about and you can have your lives improved by my flawless musical collection.

      Anybody interested?

      Hard to say.

I'm not selling it and I don't stand to make any profit from it. This is all music that's already owned by at least one person (hopefully).

i'll participate then, as long as i don't risk having the "music" police showing up at my door, hauling my butt to jail. Not good, not good at all.

I don't think it matters whether or not you sell it. If each individual with a copy of the mix doesn't own a legitimately purchased copy of ALL of the tracks, then it's not legal (as I understand it).

Too bad, I thought it was a neat idea as well...

OTOH, if the tracks are all in the public domain or we have permission to "re-record", then no problem...

There are legal ways to achieve a similar effect.
All those with similar subscription jukeboxes could program the "TWeb mix" as a set list.

I haven't checked lately, but there once were online radio stations for which no paid subscription was needed.

No need to utterly scrap the idea just yet.

If folks like the mix and the music is available for legal download, then whoever wants a copy can get one, and it's all legal.

      That depends.
For example, I've got RoadRunner Rhapsody (now run by Real Networks, but they haven't entirely ruined it).
I can set up a set list on my jukebox and export it to others. Receiving the list in this case would be as complicated as having the music service and giving somebody your e-mail addy.

Is this a streaming audio service?

I hesititate to go that route cause it will alienate the dial-up users.

problem is that lots of the music probably isn't gonna be available in that kind of format

Well, that's the drawback. I'm sure the the monthly fee for the service would alienate some users, also.

I mention it because there are probably a good number who have the service in the first place. For them, it's easy. For others, another arrangement might have to be made.

In answer to the subsequent post (Mark Porter), yes there's plenty of music missing from the Rhapsody database, but OTOH there's plenty of good stuff there.
A mix made using one of those services is likely to be less eclectic than otherwise. If that aspect is essential to you, then you'd be more in favor of dropping the idea.

Speaking for myself, much of what I listen to is on the eclectic side, but enough of it is on the border of mainstream that I can find some of it available on a service such as Rhapsody, and I'd get some enjoyment from exchanging sound preferences with others (so long as there's an Urban Sound filter that keeps me from hearing that non-music stuff that the kids are so crazy for these days ... ).
