The Straight Dope on Mormonism (LDS)

I'm not all that interested in Mormonism (or whatever formal name those who choose to practice this faith prefer to be known as), but I am a great fan of Cecil Adams and The Straight Dope, even before it was a web site and we had to read books to get our information. I subscribe to their weekly newsletter, and thought I would share with TWeb what their staff has to say on this topic just as a point of interest:

Many years ago I did some research on LDS and found much of what you reported in your article. I did find one interesting claim reported around the time of Smith's forming of his church. The claim was the Book of Mormon was an actual manuscript for a book writen by someone else acquired or found by Joesph Smith by less than honorable means. I unfortunately at this time cannot document this claim.
