Science/Bible/Cosmos
Science
Until the 20th century philosophers and scientists thought that
- Space Time Matter is eternal
- The universe is infinite
The Bible states:
- Space Time Matter had a beginning
- The universe is finite
This information is in Genesis 1:1, the first words of the Christian Bible and the Hebrew Bible.
--------------------------
Moses wrote this down 3500 years ago. It took about 2400 years for science to catch up to Revelation of God to us. Read the philosophies and other creation accounts and you will note that the Bible is the only document to state what it took mankind up until about 100 years ago to figure out with science.
Science
Up until the 20th century we did not know that space is expanding from a finite point. In fact, it is only very recently scientists figured out that it is space expanding, not objects hurtling that accounts for the distance widening between matter in the universe.
Bible
Psalm 104 states that Yahweh stretches out the universe. That was written down about 3000 years ago. Isaiah 42:5; Isaiah 45:12 repeats this same statement.
Science
Science recognizes that the amount of stars is a huge number in the last few hundred years and the verifies this recently, within the 20th century, noting the ends of the universe are at least 15 billion light years apart. There must be trillions of pieces of matter, stars. There are about 50-100 billion galaxies we think.
Bible
Jeremiah states: "As the host of heaven cannot be numbered." in Jeremiah 33:22. People concentrated on planets and stars for navigation purposes and made a religion out of it, but were not quite as aware in the main to make this kind of statement. His contemporaries of the 7th century BC believed that there were about 6,000 stars. The astronomers believed that we can number the stars.
Science
In the 20th century we found out that the sun follows a circuit in the Milky Way Galaxy as the galaxy spins.
Bible
Psalm 19:6 states this about the sun: His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof. This was written down when most people had elaborate mythologies to explain where the sun was at night.“Look around you, Gabrielle. Lush prairie. And those bushes with orange berries? See them, on those dunes? Sea Buckthorn. It grows wild here, and the oil works wonders on horses.”

Jacko, I'm glad you've found the time in your busy schedule to start another thread!

Well, Son, I pretty much agree with you for once. The Big Bang theory posits a beginning of spacetime, vis-a-vis the Steady State ideas of Freddie Hoyle, et.al., up to the late 1940s.
I do have a question or two for ya though. 3500-2400=900. To what historic episode are you referring that occurred 900 years ago in which "science caught up to Revelation" (not sure what you mean with the capital R here???).
BTW, why do think Moses wrote the Pentateuch 1500 years BC? Do you have any evidence of this? Is this necessary for a true Christian faith?
There's a healthy hermenutical debate about what "stretching out the Heavens means." Personally, I have no problem with the hyper-concordist notion that this refers to the rapid expansion of spacetime 13.7 Ga (or so) ago. Many Bible experts (especially of the 'Merikan Fundie strain) will argue with you about this. Probably the most reasonable historical-critical interpretation is that this is referring to spreading out the Heavens like a tent -- which is quite concordant with the Bronze Age concept of a flat Earth with a dome over it, with all the celestial bodies moving about on said dome.Science

Fine. This interpretation is all well-and-good, but it's equally possible to interpret these passages in a figurative manner, or at least within the cultural context of the folks of Jeremiah's time.
Not sure what you mean by "the astronomers believed that we can number the stars."? Do you have a reference?

This is a dubious interpretation of Psalms at best. I have no idea of your mixing up of Earth's rotation on its axis producing the 24-hour diurnal variations in the day/night cycles and the circuit of the solar system in the Milky Way. These are completely different concepts. Please explain! Bitte?

The different concpets are different, quite true. They are different because they are.
You don't have to know any of this stuff for Faith. There is only one thing to know and that is God through His Son as Lord and Savior. That is the only thing for true Faith. I just think that God did not leave us a record of things fro no reason. I also think if we determined to never learn anything after knowing the only needful thing is to Fear God and obey His Commands and that Salvation and the Way is only through the Son that is not right. It was after I became a believer that I really began to live. Me, being a pea brain, I would not know anything if not for God, so I think it is okay to know about stuff.“Look around you, Gabrielle. Lush prairie. And those bushes with orange berries? See them, on those dunes? Sea Buckthorn. It grows wild here, and the oil works wonders on horses.”

Now, praytell --- what does this have to do with your OP?
