Satanism
I was reading a letter to youth from the Church of Satan and it suddenly dawned on me that Satanism is a very sarcastic religion (if it can be called that). I don't think it's as bad as it's made out to be most of the time, but I wonder if Anton LaVey (is he still alive) is sitting back somewhere having a good laugh that his joke on religion was carried this far. I don't mean this to be offensive to any Satanists, but when you read the Satanic Bible or other things written from the Church of Satan, they come off very satirical.

Re: Satanism
Anton LaVey died several years ago. I tried reading the satanic bible, I find it is offensive at several levels (just at a literary level for instance, it borrows heavily from Ragnar Redbeard without credit, and his biography is full of errors) and that just put me off.

Re: Satanism
Justin, so do Satanists that follow LaVey realize that? lol, to me, if I realized my religion was founded on sarcasm, that'd put me off a little bit. And did LaVey mean for it to be a serious religion or was it meant as a joke? What got me laughing today was that I found this letter to youth in a college sort of textbook, At Issue. If you're in college you've seen them and probably used them a lot... but the letter said that you needed a signed parental consent form to join the church. It mentioned other things about being a pure environment free from perverts, unlike Big Brothers/Big Sisters. It was just really funny and well written so you're left not knowing if they're serious or intentionally making you laugh.

Yeah, most LaVeyists have turned sarcasm into an art form. You have to remember, Joan: LaVey was an atheist, and the CoS is a completely atheistic organization. They have absolutely no belief in God--or Satan, for that matter--andthey figure once you die, that's it, so have fun while you're here.

Re: Satanism
oh I know that they don't believe in either God or Satan, that's whats so funny. They only chose the name Satan because its sort of the opposite of God. Since God stands for abstinence and self control, Satan should stand for freedom and self love, or at least thats what they think.
Did you call me Joan? /:)

PRetty much--and even at that, Satan is a symbol, not a belief.

Jill, I'm lucky to remember my own name more than about twice a day.

Re: Satanism
The members I knew did not in reality worship Satan. They could care less. To them it was an anti-establishment protest. A few thought Satan existed, but often joked about worshiping him.
