Home Economics 101

Welcome to the Home Ec Section. Matters of the family sometimes bring joy and other times bring grief. But it is never trivial: Family matters! Feel free to discuss topics such as the sanctity of marriage; the awesome responsibility of raising children; the struggles of communication problems; the grief of losing a loved one; or anything else that relates to the home and family. However, due to the more personal nature of this section, I ask that you would be especially thoughtful of the readers' feelings. My earnest hope and prayer is that the discussions in this section will help families grow in the love of Christ.

But remember, always play by the rules: here

I don't think I would like bachelor, cooked, baked, fried, or even slow roasted.

Managed to sauté fresh flounder fillets on Thursday. They turned out pretty well, but next time I need to use a little less heat (set off the smoke detector ). I ate them with a side of boiled peas & corn.

A lot less heat. Fish doesn't need high heat to cook properly.

Well, we bake it Alaska, in Mexico I understand they fry it (well Mexican Restaurants anyway) so why not try grilling?

I just ordered this from Amazon:

                  http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-GR-3..._4%3ACuisinart

It's a grill, griddle, and panini maker. A George Foreman Grill on steroids.

I bet it can grill ice cream.

Well, I used the griddler over the weekend. I like it.

So far I made grilled chicken strips
                          grilled veggies
                          Onion rings (yeah with breading)
And flatbread grilled bbq chicken pizza

Everything came out great, except the onion rings. They were OK but never got very crispy.

Coolness! Try a grilled cheese with bacon.

Y'all are getting right fancy with your cooking for this thread.

On Saturday, I looked in my fridge and found ... well, four onions. Since it was onions or shopping, onions it was. But you can't just eat onions, so I put some rice in the cooker while I sliced the onions thin and set them to reduce in a frying pan before wandering off to do a bit of writing. A wafting smell brought me back to the kitchen. Fortunately, it was a non-stick pan, so I was able to take the burned bits and push them off the bottom.

Now rice and onions isn't much of a meal, either, so I checked my cupboard and found ... hey, two cans of tomato soup! Progresso, no less. So one of them got stirred in with the onions and I wandered off again. Hmm, seems I've been here before. Well, a cup of water into the pan brought it back to loose. Seeing as the rice had been done for a while, I plated some, poured the tomato-souped onions over it, and sprinkled some parmesan on top.

On Sunday, I had the rest of it. And that, my friends, is what bachelor cooking is really all about.

Seems I'm down to oatmeal and rice now. I bet Grandpa Jed could figure out a way to make that work. I've got a can of tomato soup, too, if that's any help.

I use oatmeal most anywhere people use rice. Oatmeal alone, nah, it needs a little something with it - at least some butter (or what you might prefer).
