    Not that simple because they will say that the people who wrote it really believed that the earth was flat, and covered by a solid dome(despite all the problems this would cause in the texts).

    I believe the rule is,
    When they use it, its a figure of speech,...
    ...because they're smart scientists.

    But if we use it its literal because we believe The Bible is God's Word, which makes us 'not very bright'
