Re: silmarillion
Luv,
Read only the Quenta Silmarillion and skip to "Of the Coming of the Elves." I believe chapter 3 or 4.
Yes, the Sil is the greatest book in fantasy with the possible exception of Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay, but it is not for everyone. For true conversion, click here.

Oh, read the trilogy more than 20 times and the Sil just shy of 20 times.

The Silmarillion is the greatest world-building book in fantasy.

"Thou hast learnt the way, how in the judgment thou mayest be found among those on the right hand; guard that which is committed to thee concerning Christ, and be conspicuous in good works, that thou mayest stand with a good confidence before the Judge, and inherit the kingdom of heaven:—Through whom, and with whom, be glory to God with the Holy Ghost, for ever and ever. Amen" -St Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lecture XV
"All those who find rest within the material world and are not troubled about the salvation of their soul resemble the foolish young birds that don't make commotion inside their egg, so as to break the shell and come out to enjoy the sun (to soar inot the Heavens of the paradisiacal life). Rather, they remain motionless and die within their eggshell." -Elder Paisos

Re: silmarillion
If GGK didn't have the ability to write very well, I would call most of his books pulp fantasy, because everything in them is too obvious. Unlike Tolkien who is full of subtleness.

Re: silmarillion
LAR was too heavy-handed for me. I liked Tigana better not because of the characters but because of the themes, especially memory. I also enjoyed what he was able to do with the themes and the relationship between the Prince and his mother.
A Song for Arbonne was good also, with a few strong characters, but the themes were too clumsily dealt with to make the book effective. For true conversion, click here.

Re: silmarillion
UT is unforgettable - not dry at all - it's as good as the Sil, whether Tolkien is describing Tuor's encounter with Ulmo, the Disaster at the Gladden Fields, the coming of Tuor to Gondolin, the Istari in Valinor, or the Druedain in Numenor. The only thing wrong is that there is not enough of it.
The Sil is a masterpiece - but not long enough. TV Tropes has a gigantic list of "Crowning Moments of Awesome" in TLOTR.

The Silmarillion is my favorite book of all time.

"I hate Manwe's posts because I hate babies and America." --Augustine2004, August 6, 2011
Then Morgoth turned upon Húrin, and he said: 'Fool, little among Men, and they are the least of all that speak! Have you seen the Valar, or measured the power of Manwë and Varda?
Do you know the reach of their thought? Or do you think, perhaps, that their thought is upon you, and that they may shield you from afar?'
'I know not,' said Húrin. 'Yet so it might be, if they willed. For the Elder King shall not be dethroned while Arda endures.'
The Words of Húrin and Morgoth, "The Children of Húrin" by J.R.R. Tolkien
