Gutsy move for TV?
I recently posted in the Amphitheater that the Smallville show is going to have sex between Clark and Lana. I disagree with this, but think there are still several redeeming properties to the series such as the defeat of good over evil and the family of the Kents as a whole, particularly the parents and their attitude toward their super son.
However, I remember checking for info on this story elsewhere and found a forum on a Smallville site and had someone talking about it happening and what a gutsy move it was and kudos for rejecting an outdated morality.
Now I'm just wondering how in our day and age this is considered a gutsy move.
A former president can have oral sex in the White House and still have America's approval.
Ellen who came out of the closet on national TV can host the Emmy's.
Sex shows up regularly in almost every TV show and in many movies you can expect to see a sex scene.
I'm sure we can go on and on.
If, however, someone wants to really say something gutsy on TV, I have a suggestion.
Why not say something like, "You know, I'd really like to sleep with you right now, but I believe in the Judeo-Christian principles this nation was founded on and I just can't do it."
Or have a hero saying,
"I personally believe in Jesus Christ and that he's the only way to salvation."
Now usually in most series, such a person who says that is the one that's seen to be the villain or the idiot. Instead, let's have a hero say something like that. It doesn't take guts to go with what is popular in the mainstream today. It takes guts to go against it.

Re: Gutsy move for TV?
What a president does in his private life is none of our buisness, no more than it is my buisness who you are sleeping around with.
Many of our presidents in the past had affairs - not that it was right (god forbid), but it's none of our buisness. Why the conservatives chose to attack Bill Clinton this time on that issue was most likely a matter of desperation, as there was nothing else they could find to impeach him on."Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.

Re: Gutsy move for TV?
How is it a "gutsy" move to break down and show a scene that just about every other television show for adults has shown (i.e. a sex scene)?
If anything it shows lack of drawing power for the series; that you have to use a sex scene to draw in more viewers.
Not that I've ever watched the show ;;)
It certainly sucks that we've lost Superman as a moral exemplar.
Oh well, there's always Jesus and Spider-Man.

Re: Gutsy move for TV?
As an aethist liberal, I actually agree with the OP.
It is not "gutsy" nor do they deserve "kudo's".
It is a desperate bid for more market share and ratings, because sex sells.
I have only seen parts of it a few times, it was too family for me = )

We all love Batman ^_^
However, I hear in the latest comic book there is a new version of Batman that kills a bunch of police officers with his batmobile and then laughs about it.

Uh huh, because that just rolls off the tongue.
Seriously, needless politicizing aside, I do agree that that would be more "daring" and I do in fact wish that is what Superman would do.~Gabe

Yes, you're right. Alas, I was too late!
Seriously, however, that series is starting to worry me. I hope All-Star Superman isn't similarly problematic. Then loom'd his fearsome majesty

Of course, if you're looking for good superhero role-models, you could just go to the comics.

Re: Gutsy move for TV?
As a regular Smallville watcher, I see it as a bad idea. I didn't know the show had gone down enough to resort to gimmicks for viewership. Oh well. The Lana/Clark storyline has continued to be the relationship that just can't be. Wish they would have kept it that way. Chloe is cuter anyway.
There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to dis-believe in their existance. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight. -- C.S. Lewis

If I recall correctly, there's implied bat-nookie in Mask of the Phantasm.

Batman's strong suit is not his abstinence from romance and sexual activity, but his strong sense of justice and hatred of killing.
