" invented character called 'Mary' "
This is how some people that call themself Christian talk about the mother of God
They do not even have the repect that Our Lord had for His mother.
Why do people like this that say they are Christian treat Mary less then Jesus does,She is the mother of Jesus Christ and the Bible tells us to honor Our mother why don;t people like this do not . Are you happy if people are making fun of your mother.
Apollos why do you do this ?????????

Re: " invented character called 'Mary' "
The thing about the Theotokos is this: no matter how much we love her, we can never love her as much as Jesus did.
Hail Mary!

Re: " invented character called 'Mary' "
If you are talking about Mary, the physical mother of Jesus then I think we should afford her the same respect that we should afford any other brother or sister in Jesus Christ.

I appreciate the former.
I oppose the latter.

Re: " invented character called 'Mary' "
Some of us, myself included, happen to agree with Nestorius on this and find the phrase "Mother of God" to be near anathema.

Re: " invented character called 'Mary' "
Who said she was or is an "invented character"? You don't have to name names or anything but it sounds like you're suggesting that there are people out there who deny her historicity.

Re: " invented character called 'Mary' "
So you agree that Jesus Christ is two persons in one? That's why Nestorianism rejected "Theotokos".

Re: " invented character called 'Mary' "
Jawa,
Are you sure about that? I thought they just believed that His two natures were separable and distinct such that Mary was the mother of only the Human part.
Monophysitism, as the name suggests, says He has only one divine nature.
I'm pretty sure the Nestorians affirm the two natures but deny their inseparability, thus:
If the Chalcedonian position is that Christ is 100% God and 100% man, the Nestorian position is that He is 50% God and 50% man, or if that's oversimplified (which is probably is) then they affirm that He is wholly God and wholly man but that the two natures are distinct and separable (which doesn't really make sense).“To let understanding stop at what cannot be understood is a high attainment. Those who cannot do it will be destroyed on the lathe of heaven.“ - Chuang Tzu

Did I say I agreed with everything that Nestorius thought? Or just with the idea of "Theokotos"?

Re: " invented character called 'Mary' "
I seem to recognise the title as my words! In very nearly the words of the not-so-insane desert inhabitant, if you are talking about sinless, perpetual virgin, co-redemptress, co-advocate Mother of God then you are talking about a pagan goddess that doesn't exist. And that is a better description of what I meant than I would probably have come up with!

Maybe I should have made sure before I posted. Here is what I found, from a Nestorian website:

Now this makes me confused and want to look into it more...O noble Virgin, truly you are greater than any other greatness. For who is your equal in greatness, O dwelling place of God the Word? To whom among all creatures shall I compare you, O Virgin? You are greater than them all O Covenant, clothed with purity instead of gold! Re: " invented character called 'Mary' "
The reason I said what I did is because I thought you were trying to show your position is more historical or credible since someone in the early church held that position, and like those who don't like the title Theotokos today, was rejected for his belief. My line of reasoning was, if you consider Nestorius a credible person to refer to for your rejection of Theotokos, then you would consider other things that he said credible. I didn't think you agreed with Nestorius. I'm sorry if I misjudged.
