Christianity 201 Guidelines

orthodox Christians only.

Discussion on matters of general mainstream evangelical Christian theology that do not fit within Theology 201. Have some spiritual gifts ceased today? Is the KJV the only viable translation for the church today? In what sense are the books of the bible inspired and what are those books? Church government? Modern day prophets and apostles?

This forum is primarily for Christians to discuss matters of Christian doctrine, and is not the area for debate between atheists (or those opposing orthodox Christianity) and Christians. Inquiring atheists (or sincere seekers/doubters/unorthodox) seeking only Christian participation and having demonstrated a manner that does not seek to undermine the orthodox Christian faith of others are also welcome, but must seek Moderator permission first. When defining “Christian” or "orthodox" for purposes of this section, we mean persons holding to the core essentials of the historic Christian faith such as the Trinity, the Creatorship of God, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the atonement, the future bodily return of Christ, the future bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, and the final judgment. Persons not holding to these core doctrines are welcome to participate in the Comparative Religions section without restriction, in Theology 201 as regards to the nature of God and salvation with limited restrictions, and in Christology for issues surrounding the person of Christ and the Trinity. Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 forum without such restrictions.

Additionally and rarely, there may be some topics or lines of discussion that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream orthodox doctrine (in general Christian circles or in the TheologyWeb community) or that deny certain core values that are the Christian convictions of forum leadership that may be more appropriately placed within Unorthodox Theology 201. NO personal offense should be taken by such discretionary decision for none is intended. While inerrancy is NOT considered a requirement for posting in this section, a general respect for the Bible text and a respect for the inerrantist position of others is requested.

The Tweb rules apply here like they do everywhere at Tweb, if you haven't read them, now would be a good time.

  • Jason Westerfield rebuked by Bill Johnson

Bill Johnson of Bethel (Redding) a well known Charismatic who left the Assembly of God a few years ago and who teaches and sponsors a rather extreme form of charismatic theology, has rebuked from the pulpit a former student named Jason Westerfield who travels world wide and from what I know of him he has claimed gold dust miracles, blessing children with photographic memories, and likes to talk about aliens. Bill Johnson claimed that Jason Westerfield carried a "demonic impartation" and had a spirit of deceit iirc.

Following the name drop he quoted 1 John 1:6.

Later he taught about "more at any cost." Bringing up Torronto, Pensacola, and his own personal mystic experiences, and further explained "more at any cost within Biblical understanding" or something close to that.

    He mentioned cults.

Long story short, a leader on the fringe has cut ties (including financial ties) with an someone most would probably call a heretic.

The full sermon is available through iTunes it's from April 26.

I really don't even know what to say about this. (Maybe Ecclesiology is better?)

Edit: If you know about this, you probably know more than I do about this, please share.

Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith? -Galatians 3:5

I'm not entirely sure. Johnson is someone I'd hesitantly support, whereas Westerfield is apparently wacko enough that he's been disassociated. I find it encouraging that a seperation is being made, and hopefully its the first of many throughout the charismatic culture.

I'm hoping there is a general disassociation with Todd Bentley....although I haven't heard much of him lately.

The last I heard he still does preaching and "healing" but on a much smaller scale. I saw a video of a service he did and one guy started to call him out loudly and was escorted out of the building. Not really the best way to handle someone like Bentley, IMO.

So in a field of many wackos, one lesser wacko has publicly declared dissociation from a greater wacko.

Bill Johnson is famous to charismatics (at least in the circles I go through) like maybe Rob Bell for liberals, or maybe John MacArthur to Calvinists, not everything he says is assumed to be true, but we test everything and hold fast to what is good, and take him at his word. He is certainly... Extreme but if others follow his lead this could lead to an obvious seperation between sound teachers, and prosperity/new age/name it claim it charlatans who should be held accountable at least so their congregations learn of their deception.

If systematic it could be good, otherwise it's just another form of power struggle.

                  That's a good point.

Well, since you don´t know what to make of it, I´d point out that Bill Johnson hasn´t actually said anything of it either. You´re confusion is understandable. What we hear from Johnson is a lot of vague statements aimed at the person rather than the person´s theology; things like "Spirit of Deception welcomed into his life", "Spiritually contaminating others lives..." or he´s suffering a "Demonic impartation" isn´t a warning against anything specific. It´s slander. Johnson tells his flock that there´s a problem, but fails to accurately explain what the problem is and where Westerfield has supposedly deviated from his own theology. Ask anyone who´s heard that sermon what´s wrong with Westerfield and they won´t be able to answer you, guarantee it. When John warned the body of Christ "don´t even greet such a person" he also told them what to look out for: "those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh... don´t even greet such a person". Johnson, however, does not tell his flock what to look out for, but still insists that people stay away from him while his own leaders deal with Westerfield in private.

As for the theological aspect of it all, Johnson vs Westerfield, I can´t see a difference other than Johnson being a few decades older and more reserved than Westerfield. Otherwise they´re both of the same root, preaching the same message and entertaining their followers with antics from the same hyper-charismatic movement they´re both a part of.
