One of the things I remember coming up during the last election is abortion. I'm curious, what is the most effective way to reduce abortion in America?

My comment said avoiding unwanted pregnancies. Women can decide that a pregnancy is unwanted for a variety of reasons not all to do with material comfort.

I don’t see how believing in a god say Loki would necessarily lead someone to value their children over other aspects of their lives.

People who support a women’s right to choose don’t necessarily consider a foetus a baby.

The best way to stop the majority of abortions in America is for once again for the country to realize that all of its citizens no matter how young and tiny are worthy of the protection of life. A woman's body is designed to produce children. I, of course, think that intercourse should be reserved to marriage but for those who refuse that morality, they must seriously consider the possible consequences of their actions and just not consider abortion an option.

It is analogous (though not perfectly) to marriage. How do we stop divorce? Marry well, and marry wisely, and have divorce simply not be an option in the minds of the people (yes I know there are extreme cases but there are in abortion as well when the life of the mother is genuinely at risk in which case I do not oppose abortion in most cases)

2) Make it harder to get an abortion
3) Teach kids that the unborn are people, and killing them is wrong.
4) Teach kids that "safe" sex just means you get pregnant next year instead of next month, and the abstinance is safer.
5) Get the local abortion clinic to move 300 miles away.

People who support a women’s right to choose don’t necessarily consider a foetus a baby.

Technically speaking it isn't. Just as technically speaking a toddler isn't a teenager. But there are all human beings at the normal stage of development of a human being at that time. Women who are pregnant do not go around stating that they are carrying a feotus. They are carrying a child.

One of the first ways to desensitive a culture to a mostrosity is to used dehumanizing words. It is a human feotus, in the same way a two-year old is a human toddler, in the same way that a 13 year old is a human teenager.

Now I hear the swoop of Rahab and DLW with all their fancy talk on morphology and blah blah blah, but this really is not all that complicated. And Rahab's speaking of the baby as an alien invader using a woman's organs against her "will" (the only even remote case that can be made for that is rape - and even there it is repulsive) is so absolutely disgusting to think that this is common from a Christian woman. DLW makes a different argument but totally contorts the meaning of "image of God" which has nothing to do with the dreaded word of "morphology" but authority. JPHolding's book on Mormonism deals with this in great depth since Mormons use DLWesque arguments to prove that God looks like us and lives on Planet Kolob.

I don't know Dee Dee, I think I mentioned that I had been struggling through that very idea, the idea of saving the life of the mother that is. I was recalling a professor of mine in an ethics class at seminary. In response to a question regarding abortion in that circumstance he said, "This is not mean to answer all situations universally, but I will tell you this, the Kingdom of God is always the stronger giving it self up for the weaker. The kingdom of God is always the stronger giving itself up for the weaker."

That really hits home for me. It seems unescapably true. But maybe this is one of those instances where the conscience of each must dicatate action. As right as it sounds, in a situation where the mother's life is in danger, I doubt I could really get angry at someone for making a choice to abort. I'm not saying I would think it was right, it's just so convoluted.

Well said Dee Dee. I particularly appreciate the distinction you make between the standards we as Christians accept because of faith as opposed to what one might expect from some one with out that faith.
