Sinus headache... what can I take for it?
During this time of year, I get sinus headaches... bad. I usually take Benadryl Severe Allergy and Sinus Headache, but it knocks me out so I can only take it around bedtime.
My question is, what can I take that won't make me so drowsy? I normally do not take medicine so I don't know what's out there and what actually works.

Hi, Quanta,

A hot shower. Seriously. I used to get TREMENDOUS sinus headaches, and nothing seemed to work. One day I got in the shower, and turned the water as hot as I could stand it, and just breathed in the steam. Without trying to be gross, I could feel things in my head "popping" and opening up, and draining, and the pressure eased up. It had FELT like I had headaches in my eyeballs, really bad toothaches (teethaches?) and eyebrows about to explode.
SINCE then, I take the Walmart equivalent of Claritin (or whatever - Walitin?) every night, and I don't have sinus problems anymore.

Oh... and you don't even have to get into the shower... you can just boil some water, drape a towel over your head to catch the steam, and breath the steam from the pot, being careful, of course, not to burn yourself.

A few things from the old wives tale cabinet that actually work: Peppermin essential oil rub a drop on your head, a drop on the sinuses and on the back of the neck. A cup of hot Ginger Tea with Honey in it. And then there is the good old fashioned Tylenol with the decongestant Pseudoephedrine in it or purchase Tylenol and Pseudoephedrine seperately. (you know the behind the counter decongestant) And yest take Claritin or Zyrtec at night.

Wow, this is some serious thread necro...
I've since found that regular ibuprofen tablets don't work for me, but the version for migraines does work. I usually get Advil Migraine. I discovered this one night at work when I had a sinus headache so bad it was making me nauseous, and I asked the manager if I could go home early. They'd already had a lot of people call in sick, so in an attempt to get me to stay he asked if I'd taken anything for it. I told him I'd not found anything that worked, and he said he had the same problem but he'd found that Advil for migraines worked. He gave me some and I ended up staying through the rest of my shift.Curiosity never hurt anyone. It was stupidity that killed the cat.
