Gusseted heels are both the most common form of heel for hand-knitted socks, and ugly as sin. Seriously.

Why anyone would knit them that way rather than the afterthought or short row method is beyond me.

The short row method looks the best, but the afterthought is the most practical since the heels can be torn out and re-knitted when they are worn out.

The afterthought method can be made to look similar to short rows, also, which is a plus.

Store-bought socks are knitted with short row heels, since the other methods would be difficult if not impossible to do on a machine.

And I know this because I unravelled an old sock once, just to see how it was made.

Only I don't think they wrap the turns, they let the holes show.

But they usually use such a fine yarn that the holes don't show much.
