7 billion Welfare check
The U.S. government is on the verge of one of the biggest giveaways of oil and gas in American history, an estimated $7 billion over five years.
While the petroleum plutocrats rake in record profits, their fellow-travellers in the GOP government are secretly shelling out billions more in welfare.
You and I can't even visit a park without paying a fee, these crooks are getting paid to plunder our natural resources.
But with the Bush/bin-Laden families in control, what do you expect?
...Under projections buried in the Interior Department's budget plan, the government would let companies pump about $65 billion of oil and natural gas from federal territory over the next five years without paying any royalties to the government.

Re: 7 billion Welfare check
Good. It's about time we started reducing our dependence on foreign oil.
If the government takes a huge chunk of money out of that, then our gasoline and natural gas costs more.
I would prefer to have a lower price. Do YOU want to pay your part $7B to the government over the next 5 years?

Re: 7 billion Welfare check
If this welfare check was targeted to something which would honestly deal with Bush's addiction to oil, then I might be in favor. Direct all the money into fusion research or on conservation measures.

So, reducing our dependence on foreign oil is meaningless to you?

Re: 7 billion Welfare check
It is frustrating. This is why we should not give industries help or handouts, or at least show a little caution about it.. And while Bush isn't standing in the way, it was Clinton's law that caused this. Your point would be better served with out the Bush, Bin Laden conspiracy theories. If you don't like Bush, he's actually done plenty of dumb stuff? Why go to crack pots for reasons to dislike him?

Re: 7 billion Welfare check
Its riduculous, Muz. Just ridiculous. Without throwing out the entire oil market, and moving to a mercantilist oil system, we will always be dependant on foriegn oil, regardless of where the oil comes from, because oil prices are set on the global market. Its stupidity to suggest otherwise. We need to reduce our dependance on oil, period, and this won't do it.

I never said anything remotely like that. In fact, my comments above on conservation and alternate sources should have given you the notion that I think it's important to break the addiction to destructive non-renewable expensive fuels.

It didn't happen. Carter tried to develop alternatives but the adulterous Reagan killed those plans in favor of more oil.
Conservation. Strict and accurate mpg standards. More alternate sources, more nuclear plants and a huge push to develop fusion, cold or otherwise.
Not to mention solar, wind, tidal, geothermal and anything else besides petroleum and coal.
btw, I drive a 4cylinder American made (Nissan) small truck that gets about 25mpg CITY.

Re: 7 billion Welfare check
We need higher gas prices right now. We're waaaay beyond the stage where we need to take significant, personal steps toward reducing oil dependence. The more pain it causes when each of us fills up at the pump, the better it serves the long-term energy needs of all of us. By reducing the pain, we are just delaying the desire for treatment and making sure that when the energy anesthesia finally does wear off, we're gonna feel even worse.

Their are little baby steps we could lead up to it. We'd seem some effect just by using high efficiency light bulbs instead of the normal kind. Make the old ind go away, I say.

You Republicans crack me up. You have a royal fit if your tax money is given to people who need help paying for their medical prescriptions, but you defend the government to the hilt when it gives your tax money to oil companies that are in record profit mode.

Conspiracy theories? It is a well established fact that Bush and the bin-Laden families have been collaborating in the oil business for years.

Re: 7 billion Welfare check
The purpose of reducing dependence on foreign oil is to reduce our dependence upon the most volitile area in the world. The Arabs presently have the ability to hogtie the economies of most of the world by simply shutting off the oil wells. Granted that they would be shooting themselves in the foot, as well, but that interdependence causes problems for our foreign policy.

Re: 7 billion Welfare check
The Bin Laden family is huge. The obsurdity is that some how Bush supports Bin Laden, or has a solely oil based foriegn policy. Though, I am suspecting that we may never agree on this, so lets get back on topic.

And even if we drilled every available site in the US, this would still be the case.
