The TWeb exercise support group
Alright everyone! I was just talking to a friend of mine wanting to gain weight just like I am actually and be in better shape just like I'm wanting to be. Maybe some of you are out there also that are wanting to be in better shape. Maybe you want to gain weight or lose it or be stronger of faster or something of that sort.
I hereby suggest then that as long as we have a diet support group, we also have an exercise support group for those of us wanting to work out and keep in physical shape. If you want to post some encouragement and advice for your fellow exercisers, here's the place to do it.

Does that include lifting and operating the remote control?

Re: The TWeb exercise support group
Sign me up. I recently signed up to use the fitness facility affiliated with the hospital that I now work at (and at $6/month for employees, it's way too good a deal to pass up), and I'd like to work on getting in shape, working on endurance/stamina while excercising, and getting a bit stronger and trying to gain a little weight from it (I'm pretty scrawny so every little bit helps).
I did some stuff with it today for 30 mins or so, and felt really good physically afterwards.
Okay, I finally have a blog.

3. if running/walking/biking before daylight or after dusk, wear reflective clothing.

5. when possible, use a workout partner.
6. remember to give your body time to rest the muscle groups you've worked.I need a new signature.

I can swim, I'm jsut terribly afraid of the water, and panic for absolutely no reason.
I have been attending a spin class three or more times a week, and its a good workout. it's helped me to decrease my run time on two separate occasions.
first in teh spring, I was running about a 25 minute 3 mile, but after 6 weeks of spinning three days a week adn running 3 days a weeks, I managed to cut my run time down to 21:38 for that same 3 mile course.
then again this fall, after i had my hernia repair surgery in August, I started my spin class again in late september, adn have managed to again go from running about 27-29 minute 3 mile in September, to running about 22 minute 3 miles just this week!
now, if only I could rebuild my abs. After my hernia repair, i've lost myability to do situps. Afte rmy surgery, i couldn't barely do 5.
as part of my required semi-annual physical fitness test, i am required to do do a minimum of 50 crunches in 2 minutes, but for a max score, i need to do 100. i've always done 100......until after my hernia repair surgery. i've managed to get up to about 75-85, depending on if I'm having a good day or not, but I need to get back to 100.
I've started doing incline situps again, and they've helped, but I can't do too many before I feel like the stitchs in my abdomen are tearing. sily I know, teh surgery was about 3 months ago, but it still hurts.I need a new signature.

Re: The TWeb exercise support group
I started going back to the gym yesterday. For me, aerobic stuff is so boring. I normally close my eyes and listen to music, but I've discovered something even better than music, and thought I'd share.
Podcasts. For those of you not in the know, these are like small radio programs that you can find on any topic imaginable. Many podcasts even have multiple episodes. The real trick here, though, is to find a topic you enjoy and to make sure you listen to a podcast you haven't heard before. I closed my eyes last night, listened to a Buffy-themed podcast, and Dad had to yell real loud to bring me back to reality once our aerobics were done. Time flew like never before.
Now I know a lot of people like music. I do, too. I listen to it most waking hours, in fact. But a problem with that is that I don't have many songs on my iPod I haven't heard before, and I know approximately how long each song is so even with my eyes closed I find myself knowing about how much time I've worked out and how much I have left to go, and just knowing makes time drag. I try not to think about it, but it's hopeless.
If your workouts don't seem to drag while listening to music, great. I know I have some weird quirks, so this could be unique to me. But I just discovered the power of podcasts and thought I'd share. I'm going to go look for more 'casts now. Later!

Re: The TWeb exercise support group
I recently found out that my old church in NC has gone to podcating their services! which I think it awesome, becasue I really miss pastor chris. but to listen to the services, I had to download something quicktime and something iTunes and then click something to receive all their updates, and then when I tried to listen to it on ym computer I couldn't! I was really bummbed! do I really have to buy an ipod? I was told that I could listen to them both on an ipod and the computer, which is why I downloaded all that free software. and I really am not able to buy an ipod at teh moment.

I do like music, and I listen to it often, and I see a lot of people in my spin class with their ipods, or out running with ipods, so I know they must be pretty awesome, but I just can't get one right now.
I don't know that I would be comfortable running with an ipod and having that wire dangling from my earpiece....I'd probably freak out and get all tangled or something. but that's just me. my husband runs with his (when he remembers) and has no problems, but I'm very particular about my running habits.
we had a pretty awesome spin class yesterday. Earl came back.....but just as a substitue. I think I've platued with the spin class though, becasue even Earls class wasn't nearly as challanging as it used to be last year. my legs are strong, and I'd like to work on my speed drills again, but for the next four months or so (Jan-May) I really need the endurance more than the speed.
I can probably work in one speed workout a week and one really long run a week. that could be doable.
the speed work would have to be Monday or Tuesday though, and the long run would have to be Friday or Saturday. Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.

When on an aerobic machine, I watch DVDs, when doing the weights, I listen to podcasts all the time.

Re: The TWeb exercise support group
Hey, Semmie's Sis! If you've downloaded iTunes(including QuickTime) then you should be able to listen to the Podcasts you downloaded using iTunes. If you had to use iTunes to download them in the first place, chances are they're in Apple's m4p file format, which is proprietary and only compatible with certain Apple products(like iTunes and iPod).

A lot of places will also have their podcasts available on their website in mp3 format(I'd suggest emailing your old church to request them in mp3 format). Yes, this technically makes them not podcasts, but that name is popular and is used the same way Kleenex is used for all tissues regardless of brand name. I almost included this bit of info in the above post, but thought it might be confusing. File format is important!
If you are trying to play them in iTunes and it's not letting you, though, I don't know what's up with that. You can ask in the geek wing, though, and someone will probably know how to help you.
Also, if you do ever get an iPod, iTunes doubles as the software that allows your computer to interact with your iPod. You need to make sure all of the music, videos, etc. that you want on your iPod are listed in your iTunes library. If you get another mp3 player besides an iPod, though, it will have its own instructions and you can disregard this.

Re: The TWeb exercise support group
thanks for that info, I don't know what I did, but I decided to start all over with downloading the free software that I needed to get started, adn it still didn't work!

and i was gettin frustrated because I know I followed the directions, but it still wasnt' working, so I tried it again, and viola! it worked! I still have no ipod, but I can listen to them on my computer, which is fine by me! and ya know, I 've still no clue what I did/didn't do the same/differently the third time that made it work.
but it works now, and I'm happy!
but in keeping with the exercise theme of this thread, I will add that my workout today was super intense! Our instructor was really beat from traveling back from the states and returning from her holiday break, so we just did climbs....4 of them, with some sprints inbetween.
but to me, climbs are more about endurance, and so I decided to really work hard today to make it more about strength building and endurance! So I cranked up teh resistence so much that you couldn't even put any more resistence on the bike, and by the end of teh 4th hill, I had reached total muscle failure in both my legs!
so I know I was working them hard!
so, the instructor wasn't pushing hard today, caus eit was her first class in two weeks, but I worked hard, and really enjoyed my time in class!I need a new signature.

Ya gotta start somewhere....

That is exactly what you need to bear in mind if you feel discouraged when you're starting to exercise. Congrats!
