    How to clean your house

    1) Evaluate
    2)Ask: If I haven't used this in 3 months will I need/ use it?
    3) Does it work? Is it realistic?
    4) Why do I need this?
    5) Can I handle it?
    6) If its just taking up space and has no purpose, throw it out.
7)If it doesn't fit, throw it out
    8) If its meaningless throw it away
    9) If its expired, moldy hazardous or trash, throw it out.
    10) Never keep more than what you need/use.

I threw out a whole house full of junk this way and my house is organized and clean. Its nice. Now I have to keep it that way.

That sounds great, I usually am very organized in this manner when it comes to cleaning, my problem is time. It's hard to find time to dedicate to doing this.

    Catholicity:

Overall sound advice. Excessive clutter (pardon the redundancy) is a pet peeve of mine. We can really get by well with very little. As you mentioned, once getting rid of a load of stuff, maintenance is key. Like "dieting", it must be a way of life. Otherwise, we will repeat the same process of accumulating/hoarding and end up with much more than we need again. (I actually am acquainted with a few persons who have issues with hoarding. It's quite scary and sad, actually.)

    1) Buy new home.
    2) Burn down old home.
    3) Repeat as necessary.

    Alternatively Teal,
you can do what I did, and pack up everything BUT your important documents and clothes, and a few books and your child's furniture. When you realize you can live without most EVERYTHING, Throw all of it away. It works perfectly.

Well among other things my ex was a hoarder, so if he didn't take it,/didn't ask for it the answer is hands down yes, I threw it out. Along with everything I didn't need, including my own dishes. Since I was getting married I was getting nice new ones. Once I finished organizing the apt, I threw away everything I had not previously thrown out, plus old broken toys, and then created space for items that didn't have a space by making use of a bookshelf and purchasing a cube organizer and fabric drawers to go with it.
