God's Brothel: "Chilling Expose on Sexual Slavery in the Name of God...
I just watched an interesting talking-head show about Polygamy in Colorado/Arizona/Utah. Here is a synopsis about a book mentioned on the cable TV show.
God's Brothel: The Extortion of Sex for Salvation in Contemporary Mormon and Christian Fundamentalist Polygamy and the Stories of 18 women who escaped
by Andrea Moore Emmett
"Chilling Expose on Sexual Slavery in the Name of God...
"This powerful expose shows how the huge families of sister-wives and children drain welfare funds in order to survive and typically live in poverty while the patriarch enjoys his sexual, monetary, and religious status"....
Reviewer: K. A. Palmer -Seattle, Washington
Andrea Moore-Emmett, the author is a native of Colorado who now lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. She speaks across the country concerning abuses against women and children within polygamy Moore-Emmett is a prize-winning journalist and was the researcher for the two-hour documentary, Inside Polygamy, aired on A&E and the BBC.

I would like to discuss this issue and learn more about the truth discovered in Polygamy. I do appreciate and understand that abuse occurs in all Marriages, in all States in America.
In this case, Andrea Moore-Emmett has a story to tell in her own voice.Last edited by Yakkity Yak; March 18th 2006 at 12:20 AM.

I would suspect that the current news is fundamentalist or reformed LDS who still hold to that practice... The CoJCoLDS no longer sanctions polygamy ...you might find this article interesting...

Hi there!
I was viewing a similar program on satellite tonight on polygomy in Utah. The individuals involved were fundamentalist LDS who believe that the CoJCoLDS has deviated from the true teachings and that multiple wives are a requirement for the celestral kingdom.
They sure were marrying them off young and with close marriages. The first girl was 16, the 14th wife of her 33-year-old uncle. Her mother was a half-sister to her father.
The father was charged with child abuse for beating his daughter unconscience because she ran away from her husband. The pictures were horrifying.... bruises on her back, shoulders, legs, they said 28 times she was hit with a leather strap with full force.

I haven't watched the show, but I've read parts of Under the Banner of Heaven. I read the part about an 80 year old getting 14 year old brides.

A lot of these groups seem to continue to thrive becuase the Gov't can't do anything about it without suffering a backfire of media sympathy. However, I've often wondered why CoJLDS don't push for something to do be done. I asked to missionaries who came to my Apt about this and the impression I got was that there is kind of a "live and let live" attitude towards it.
Still though, I wonder why the mainstream LDS church wouldn't want to Gov't to intervene. Religious liberty is one thing, but outright abuse is another. If the mainstream LDS church doesn't approve of these actions, shouldn't the LDS church make at least make it easier for the Gov't to do its job?Dropping a few Eschatology Bombs, or "Let's think before we endorse another way."

In Reynolds vs. the United States, the court declared that laws ". . . cannot interfere with mere religious belief and opinions, but they may with practices."
When those practices are abuse, it would/should be reported. That's probably the biggest problem, it isn't reported as abuse.
