Just did a wooden frame tutorial:

What is cool about this is that this is not a preset texture, the "wood" is created from a plain background layer in stages. this is how it starts...

and this is how it ends and different wood colours can be made by using levels

Yeah that is a good idea. I was trying out the one effect with the tutorial I was doing and didn't consider the rest of the image.
