My sister has used crochet cotton to knit tablecloths and doilies and such. I am not ready yet to knit with knitting needles as fine as toothpicks and thread as fine as sewing thread.

But I have thought about it, and it isn't out of the question in the future.

      What's your favourite colour, Laura?

      Burgandy....

That's why I suggested runners - they are often thicker than standard table cloths and on a sideboard the difference in weight won't matter if it's really thick. Those don't look thick enough to be a problem on a set table, though.

Another cool thing that would work well with beads is a lamp shade cover. Placed over a commercial shade you don't need to stiffen and beaded drops would be really pretty on a couch table or a side table.

I suppose I should get busy on my backlog of projects...

      Re: Knitting lace....

I just would not use wool for a tablecloth or runner unless it was used in a place where it would never need to be washed. Because washing involves blocking, which is always the worst part of knitting these things, to me. Zillions of pins and rulers and general tearing out of hair.

(Gentle reminder to Thirsty: try not to get the scarf dirty, darlin'! We don't want Auntie Crow to get cross with you!

      :huggy:)

I think cotton would also have to be blocked, but because it is not as springy as wool, it would be easier to block.

Lampshades would be nice, but that is not something I am interested in. You never know. I never thought I would be interested in knitting lace, either.

Some new scarves I have knit for friends.

2 of them are the same pattern, one in "Cheeto Orange" and the other in "Raisin".

The "Malachite" green one is a wool/silk blend, no beads because I couldn't find any I liked of the proper colour.

The last is in "Begonia". LOVE this colour!

      Re: Knitting lace....

I knit and crochet, as well as a little bit of other things. I'm starting to quilt but I have to get things back to normal to carry on. I've knitted and crocheted for years, essentilly self taught. It's only been in the last four years or so that I've started K and C in three dimensions though. I made a swaeter for my grand-daughter when she was born, and found it was easier than I thought it would be. I and now working on socks. I started one pattern, messed it up so I had to undo and restart it. It's at home. The other pair I have here at work. It was supposed to be knitted, but I had such trouble with gaps between the needles, that I gave up and am crocheting it. It's part of a kit of the month club that give directions for knitting and crocheting the same project. I'm not sure why I had trouble with this pair, but not the other. (Different problem with the pair at home.) The only thing I can think of is the pattern I had trouble with uses size 6 and 8 needles. The pattern at home uses the little bitty size 2 needles. (I think that translates to an 11 up north.)

I have a pattern I want to do for my sister that uses the bedspread weight thread. It's a knitted lace edging for pillow cases and and insert for sheets. I'd really like to do some of the lacy stuff like your scarves, Mossy, they are just beautiful. Tyarn is a little out of my budget right now, but I'm working on that situation.

I can post pictures of my stuff just yet, but I hope to have internet at home by the end of the month, then look out! I'm rather tech stupid, but once I figure it out.....

      Re: Knitting lace....

moreta, the wool I use the most is from Knitpicks. They have very reasonable wool.

I can get laceweight from them starting at 2.99 for 50 gms. And there are about 440 yards in one 50 gr. skein, which is enough to do a triangular shawl or 2 scarves. It is very good quality for the price.

You could do lace with acrylic yarn, which is cheaper. Try a baby weight, or a fingering weight yarn. Those will approximate a bit heavier lace weight. You can knit lace with any weight yarn.

I will look forward to seeing pictures of your work!

Isn't crochet thread the norm for tatting? I know you need something really fine to do that.

      Tatting is beautiful.

Oh, and my sister knits big round tablecloths from crochet thread with about size 00 needles. I don't think I would even be able to see the needles!

Well, I found this. Didn't know you could use pearl cotton sports-weight yarn. The yarn would be quite heavy, imo.

I made this shawl for a friend of mine this past autumn. It turned out pretty good, if I do say so myself.

It's done with a fairly fine merino wool from New Zealand. They are hard to see, but there are green beads on it, almost the same colour as the wool. They just add a little glimmer in the light.
