BoM's take on Satan and Hell
In 1 Nephi 15:35, the BoM says, "And there is a place prepared, yea, even that awful hell of which I have spoken, and the devil is the preparator of itwherefore the final state of the souls of men is to dwell in the kingdom of God, or to be cast out because of that justice of which I have spoken."
I have two questions from this verse. Was not hell created for the devil and his angels? Why would he create his own torment?
Second, does the word "preparator" have a creative connotation? If it does, sense when does Satan have creative powers? He is a created being, correct?
Just a few thoughts from someone who has been gone awhile.

I don't know if "preparator" necessarily has a creative connotation. I can prepare my house for company, but I didn't build it. Doesn't really matter. As far as LDS thought goes, the word "Creator" doesn't even quite have a "creative" connotation. No one has creative powers or is a created being in Mormonism. Things can only be organized.

seems that Smith believed the old tales that the Devil was the ruler of hell instead of it's chief inmate.

Yes and No.
IMO, you might look at it as the location and neighborhood and boundaries are assigned and set apart for satan and his followers, and what they do with it is their own doing. And I don't forsee any happiness for the wicked who will live among people who speak, think and act just like they do.
What do you think, Sparko?

Re: BoM's take on Satan and Hell
I think Hell is where Satan and his demons will be imprisoned for eternity, and they won't have any power or control over anyone, not even themselves. They don't get to redecorate Hell to fit their needs and be comfortable.
Revelation 20:10
And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

I think the sulfur is probably metaphorical. I don't God creates evil, I think hell will be evil because evil people bring it with themselves. And I kind of agree with you, regarding nice upholstering and tapestries and internet access and lazyboys and select comfort beds. I don't think they will have them there.

Yeah the lake and sulpher could be metaphorical, but I think it is being literal when it says they will be tormented forever. Whether that is actively by God, or passively by being separated from God and all goodness, I do not know, but I know it won't be a place that they will be in charge of. Personally I think hell will be a place where they will be ALONE forever. all alone. nobody, not even satan will have any company. I think it will be like God saying to them "so you wanted to be your own god? well, now you can be your own god, of yourself, forever."
