Housebound is another great comedy horror. You ever wonder why, in a haunted house movie, the characters never just leave the house? Housebound has a good reason for this. Hilarious movie.
Haven't seen Housebound yet. It's on my list.

I love that line. I remember when I heard that Peter Jackson was going to do the Lord of the Ring Movies, I was like, 'The guy who did Bad Taste, Dead Alive, and Meet the Feebles? Well that's going to be interesting.'

I didn't actually know about his original three until years after I saw LotR. Now I find it funny to tell people about the movies that Jackson used to direct.

I blame it on my parents for never allowing to watch horror films when I was a kid. When I was old enough to watch them on my own I sorta went a little nuts with it. I also had a pal who wanted to be a horror director, and we'd make backyard movies, rent and watch tons of VHS films a night, and catch up on the latest in Fangoria magazine. I'm not really as big a fan of the genre as I used to be though. The whole "torture porn" thing that started around the time Hostel came out was just too much. I like horror films because they're like roller coaster rides. You watch them to get that adrenaline rush when something scary happens, but you know in the end that you're safe, and that you're going to get off the ride eventually. The splatter stuff that came out in the mid-2000s was less about a good scare, and more about watching people suffer unrelentingly for two hours. There's nothing fun in that. Now I pretty much stick to supernatural horrors. It Follows was a very decent recent creepy little horror film.

I never really got the gore thing. I mean, people still are a little nervous about being in the shower alone fifty plus years after Psycho.

There's a point where gore can get so crazy that the absurdity of it becomes humorous. For instance, there's a scene in Dead Alive where the protagonist if fighting off zombies in a house with a lawnmower, and the gore gets to practically waste level as he's doing this. It's insane, but hilarious (well, if you're sick in the head). Other times gore is interesting in just a "how did they do that" sort of way. Back before CGI, one of the things that I was most enamored about by horror films was the special effects. Like watching a magic show.

Dead Alive is the quintessential example of over the top.

As far as practical effects go, The Thing (1982) is tough to beat, and a really great horror movie to boot.

So, it can be effective comedy (ewwwww!) but it doesn't seem to be effective or as effective in the scare department. I still think twice when showering in a hotel - and I've never seen Psycho all the way through!

I love special effects - but there are some just really not worth doing...

I never considered the slasher movies true horror in that you could see more decapitations, dismemberments, disembowelings... in 5 minutes of a Conan the Barbarian-type movie than in an entire Nightmare on Halloween the 13th movie.

Why, when the serial killer/monster jumps onto the roof or hood (bonnet in Britain) of a car doesn't the driver simply slam on the breaks? Momentum is your friend. You come to a screeching stop and the bad guy/thing doesn't allowing you to run over them.

Although it works best if the driver slams on the brakes instead.

Yeah, I agree. Hitchcock was king at letting the viewers mind fill in the gaps. Course, he was hampered by censorship of the day, so necessity became the mother of invention. I think too many modern films (not just horror) show too much, and it serves no purpose for furthering the story. All it does is desensitize us, which contrary to their intent.
