I think I have figured something out.

The reason I submit to the mental torture of reading the apologetics section and posting there from time to time.

I'm doing the Christians a favour, If they did not have us to beat up on they would turn on each other.

Behold: Christian X holds a position on something NOT related to Christianity. Christian Y holds an opposite view. Result? Go read the PoliSci board!

I am told that the situation gets much worse in the Christian only rooms, I would not know for sure as I dont read them very much, not being able to reply.

So buck up little campers, we are performing a public service. Its all for the greater good.

Re: I think I have figured something out.

      Nice theory.

I think you're right about the religious in-fighting. When you get a group of people who all believe in a god, and all believe that they know what the god thinks/wants/will do, then it raises the level of seriousness. When they tell us things like "God says you should not light your farts on fire," we can just shrug our shoulders and ask for clarification on which god. But since they all have that common belief, it can get nasty.

I've been absent from the apologetics forum for quite a long time now, due to apathy, but I think it sounds a lot cooler if I say I'm playing mum so as to encourage the self-destruction of Christianity.

This is motivation enough to quit posting there.
Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

If they did not have us to beat up on they would look for another group. If they do not have another group, then they turn on each other. I have seen it happen plenty of times. I think it is mostly the more fanatical Christians who do that though.

Everytime we leave them alone for 5 minutes we have a new religion popping up. I mean Juadism broke apart to christianty, christianty to Islam, Catholicism, protestantism, anglicanism, orthadox etc. You know I think attacking us is the only thing they ACTUALLY have in common.

Re: I think I have figured something out.

In my opinion humans have social needs. It is very difficult to go through the process of determining associates of which you might like to associate. However, it is not only easy to target some group for disdain but also easy to gain comraderie in disdain.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

This approach quickly forms a bond of commonality.

In todays world it is politically incorrect to form common hatreds using race or nationality. However, it is a lot easier to form hatred using such measures as uncommon sexual practice, uncommon philosophical positions, or uncommon social practices.

Humans may have developed this ability to quickly form bonds with "common" persons and disdain for "uncommon" persons because they achieved some form of group protection, group cohesion and survived better because of it. (darwinian view)
