Glory Seed Devotionals, 2015: Year of Promise
David’s lesson on the depth of prayer…
“David went into the tent he had set up for the sacred chest. Then he sat there and prayed: LORD All-Powerful, my family and I don't deserve what you have already done for us, and yet you have promised to do even more. Is this the way you usually treat people?” (2 Samuel 7:18-19 CEV)
Because the Spirit was with David the physical presence of the sacred chest gave way to the presence of the Living God. When David looked at the chest he was looking into the heart of God. David did not go into the tent to be alone with something that reminded him of God, he went into the tent to be alone with God! Do you have a “tent” and a “sacred chest” where you can be alone with God? Personally the scriptures are my “sacred chest” and I have several “tents” where God and I can be intimate.
Over the years I have discovered there are different “layers” of praying. For instance there are times when all we need to do is appeal to God for help when the resources available to us are inadequate, when we need to our needs known to God (even though he’s already aware of them). “God, if I am going to live it is only because of you,” I prayed lying in a hospital bed feeling life slowly slipping away in March of 1981. Then there are those times when life comes at us from a hundred different directions where words become powerless when only God’s intimacy will do making prayer a deep life giving experience in worship.
In today’s scripture David steps from the burdens of life and into the intimacy of God experiencing his unworthiness and at the same time experiencing the overwhelming life giving, life sustaining power of God’s Grace. Such “stories” as the one quoted above come out of my sacred chest and become moments of intimacy with God. And out my experience I can answer David’s question, “No. God doesn’t treat all people that way only those who have a heart deep (genuine) relationship with him.” (I struggle with answering David’s question with a “no” because I believe the answer must come from our heart therefore I can only speak for myself. Of course God is always free to do his own thing.)
Believe! Anticipate! Experience! Be transformed!
