Bono's holding us accountable for what we said we did and it looks like we got mixed grades and could stand to do better...

And we certainly all care what Bono thinks of us, don't we?

Re: Bono says Wealthy Countries of the World did So-So in promises for 3rd World!
Um.......Bono is MY generation. Are there really that many younger people that listen to him?
And as Christians, I don't think we should really much care what he or Brigit Bardot or Paul McCartney or any of those aging personalities have to say about anything.
And, of yes, I am sure the young persons of the "3rd world" really are paying attention to him too. I mean, assuming the leaders of their Islamic countries (I assume that's who you are talking about, since you mentioned the war on terror......) allow them to listen to Bono.

And if you aren't talking about Islamic "3rd world" countries, but other "3rd world" countries, then yes, I suppose those people in Africa who make the equivalent of $300 a year US are spending all their money on radios and tvs so they can listen to Bono on his bandwagon.
A lot of countries are doing a lot to help. How much more do you think should be done? Especially when so many of those countries are run by people who won't allow whatever aid is sent to actually go to the people who need it.
Debt cancelled, money sent for AIDS, the spread of which could be stopped by encouraging abstinence and safe sex, doctors and others who volunteer much time and their own finances to go and help those who are suffering, etc., etc.,
What more do you want?
When are YOU going over?

Yup. I even heard Bono-imitators when I was in Sweden.

Well, as a Christian, I think it's because of the fallenness of the world that people will pay more attention to serious issues when celebs talk about them. That doesn't make the celebs right, per se, but it doesn't make them wrong either and all that Bono is saying is that we failed to live up completely to what we promised to do on the behalf of the extreme poor in the third world. And as Christians, I don't think we should really much care what he or Brigit Bardot or Paul McCartney or any of those aging personalities have to say about anything.
I'm sure their leaders are willing to spin whatever news of apathy of first world people to the third world they can get. But it's the extreme poverty that Bono is talking about that matters more than whether they get to listen to Bono...And, of yes, I am sure the young persons of the "3rd world" really are paying attention to him too. The War on Terrorism is not strictly due to Islam. Aspects of it are also due to the extremes of poverty and it has strong potential to expand to include terrorist acts from other non-Islamic "3rd World" countries. The extent to which the War on Terrorism can drag on and get worse is really quite disturbing and makes the sorts of economic commitments Bono is talking about important. And if you aren't talking about Islamic "3rd world" countries, but other "3rd world" countries, then yes, I suppose those people in Africa who make the equivalent of $300 a year US are spending all their money on radios and tvs so they can listen to Bono on his bandwagon.
As a Christian, I believe we are to overcome evil with good. That definitely includes looking into and taking advantage of nonviolent alternatives to state-based violence to dealing with problems. This is why I harp over and over again about the need for a more public and nonqualified apology by the US to Iran on behalf of our regime change of them in 1953 and support of the political tyranny of the Shah for 25 years.
It won't end the problems, but it'd help. It'd reduce the ability of populists like the Iranian prez to score approval points by standing up to the US, which seems the whole point of pursuing nuclear capabilities in the first place.
The point is not that people are doing stuff, but rather us not doing what we said we would do. We need to follow through with our commitments, or not make them in the first place. And yes, I, in lieu of some Xmas gifts this past year, donated a significant amount of money to World Vision for a matching funds program.A lot of countries are doing a lot to help. How much more do you think should be done? Especially when so many of those countries are run by people who won't allow whatever aid is sent to actually go to the people who need it.
