Now, Ted, Did Jocephus look at the events around the destruction of Jerusalem and apply them to scripture or did he look at scripture and apply it to the events of 70 AD?

October 13th 2003, 10:41 AM #112Scripture - Theology (world view) - Correlation with events.Today @ 02:47 PM post located here
Bill the Cat:
Now, Ted, Did Jocephus look at the events around the destruction of Jerusalem and apply them to scripture or did he look at scripture and apply it to the events of 70 AD?
It's got to be one or the other...
Josephus saw that the events unfolding correlated with his view of what scripture said. Obviously Josephus, and New Testament writers who quoted the scriptures, fit the scriptures into a pre-existing framework. The teaching about the Messiah in the Old Testament was sufficiently vague that many of the "experts" missed it. Why? Their presuppositions were wrong. Those who understood the New Covenant revelation of Jesus could properly understand the scriptures.
My point is this - we have an underlying system of theology by which we interpret the scriptures. And the correlation of current events with scriptures is dictated by the underlying presuppositions. If you think Israel is significant to end times theology you see the fact that Israel is in the news as significant. If Americans treated Israel like any other nations (in other words ignore them), the events over there would go as unnoticed as the ongoing wars and unrest in Africa and SE Asia. The underlying American interest in Israel (due both to natural affinity as our "roots" as well as end times speculation) makes the events in that region seem more significant than other similar events in other parts of the world. In fact, it is a shame that we pay more attention to Israel than the persecuted church in China and Africa.
So we need to start with what is plain in scripture and work forward. Types and shadows will always proove to be very plastic when applied to current events. If Jesus reign extends from his resurrection to his return, according to the scriptures, how does our view of the world fit into that scheme? If death is the last enemy to be conquered, implying that all others will be conquered prior to his return - what does that imply about the triumph of the Great Commission? As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. Col 2:6-7

I believe it was Saintopher in the thread to whom I was speaking, but in any case, here is my response.
I was not saying that it was just me and a few other people who hold this view. This has been very ably demonstrated by real scholars. For instance, read Kenneth Gentry's book on the subject (the title escapes me at the moment, and I don't feel like going to my room to look for it).
However, there is a great deal of internal evidence for the early date of Revelation, which I am sure others have given at some earlier point. I don't have the time to get into all that right now. But my point was not to prove the truth of it, my point was to answer the idea that was put out that the earliest put out by anybody (at least anybody that matters) was A.D. 90, when that is just not the case.
JoelCourage itself is not a virtue. Courage is the point at which all the other virtues are tested. (C.S. Lewis)
