Umbris returns upright and deftly flips the coin back and forth over the knuckles of his paws. He has a plain businesslike look on his face.

Judging from here I'd say we're quickly running out of time at this venue. Madam, perhaps I should ask you if this investigation is what you really desired. If so, I suggest relocating if we are to do further planning. Either way, it could still be useful to seek out privacy. Is there somewhere else we can talk?

Thanatos eyes Umbris' seemingly idle display rather nonchalantly before continuing on to address the Dwarven woman.

"Since this is an initial meeting, it would not be a lie to tell your existing bodyguards that this is, in fact, an initial meeting. Assuming our cover as specialised tradesmen, you are aware of our trade and are interested in perusing our stock. This meeting was to establish if there were anything that might meet your fancy. So, this should give you time to think of a good cover. It also gives us a pre-text for future meetings. As far as the investigation itself, we must remain hidden, unless there comes a time where you can claim that you have purchased, in which case, we can 'deliver' them to your orphanage. Soft and quick as shadows we must be."

      Thanatos turns to his comrades:
"Umbris, Razzik... is this plan of action... agreeable?"

"Okay, well, I appreciate your going the extra mile. I really don't know if I want 'investigation'. It certainly wasn't my intent when I came over here. I intended to simply dismiss them, and hire you in their place. So... what would you advise? Should I have you investigate them, or should I just do as I originally intended? You are the professionals, I'm just an orphan keeper with a bit of a Gift from Allurehn."

((Sidenote: The guards are NOT hobgoblins. They appear to be a human[the only one not wearing armor], another human who looks to have some orc blood[Full-Plate], an elf[Chain Shirt... probably mithril], and a dwarf[Full-Plate and Holy Symbol].))

"It is my business to anticipate every eventuality, it keeps us ahead of whoever or whatever we may find ourselves up against." Thanatos replies, pausing slightly for effect.

"Well, if you don't want an investigation, then simply fire them and hire us. We can then investigate them without all this subterfuge. Although we'd have to divide time between investigating and protecting. Unless you just want us to operate as bodyguards and only investigate if the situation requires it?"

"Well, let's get this over with and then we can talk back at the orphanage further."

            She starts to get up.

((Now would be the chance for anyone who objects to this to stop her. Everyone who DOESN'T should post that in the OOC thread.))

"Get what over with? You have neglected to specify your chosen route." Thanatos interjects with as befuddled an expression as a warforged can manage.

"Hold on there Thanatos and you orphan-keeper, it would make it easier if we were the bodyguards and didn't have to investigate this other crew, but on the other hand I'm sure they aren't going to be happy about this and they know the area better than us, do we want to risk making enemies now when we could have them help us? Also, we can as you stated before just stick to the shadows near her; it will be more difficult, but less risky, and we can always develop stories ahead of time for in case we get caught."

Umbris props his head on one paw. He looks somewhat bored.

Usually I'm the one making things complicated...Gent's, I think the lady was referring to getting the fun discussion of "you're dismissed" over with. I'd say if she only wanted to hire us as body guards, then the only question we should be answering is do we want the job or not.

Umbris yawns lightly as he pockets the coin and begins cleaning the groove inside his left index claw with the point of another on his other paw.

As far as them not liking it, If we are the ones hired, we are inside the law, so guardsmen may be at our aid and we would be justified to defend ourselves. I love a good story, believe me, but sometimes all one needs is to confidently move forward. Do you disagree?

"That is what I assumed, also. However, in my experience, it is never advisable to assume anything that is not abundantly clear, and vague language is far from being abundantly clear. Which is why I asked for clarification... from the orphan keeper." Thanatos replies curtly. "Now, I cannot speak for Razzik or yourself, but I see no reason to decline this offer of employment... unless either of you feel that this is somehow beneath us."

"I was going to go tell them they were dismissed and that I had hired you people in their places so they need not worry too much about me. But only because I thought that was what was being recommended?" says the Dwarf, very confused and noticeably worried.

"It's entirely up to you, ma'am." Thanatos bows his head slightly. "To speak the truth, I know not which course of action is best. You could dismiss them and we take their place and see what happens. You could hire us alongside them, or you could keep them and have us monitor them."

                        Thanatos pauses slightly.
"It seems me that the option that presents the least amount of risk is to dismiss them and hire us in their place. Based on our current background knowledge, then, assuming nothing not already known, I calculate that there is a 98% probability that nothing more will come of this matter. However, that is assuming. All we have are suspicions, and if they turn out to be well-founded, then there is a good chance something more will come, although it would most likely not be direct. So, yes, continue as you were, Orphan Keeper. Break the news to them, and we shall depart."

                          "You people are the experts..."

She pauses, in case anyone else has anything to say.

Five Minutes later, it is done.

"They told me to tell you to 'consider carefully what is worth protecting, and do not shy away from mission creep'... what is 'mission creep' anyway?" the orphan-keeper asks after she returns to you.

"Ah, a vaguely-worded cryptic half-sentence!" Thanatos chortles in an off-hand manner. His mouth forms a smug grin as he shakes his head in amusement slightly.

"I think it is a full sentence, grammatically speaking, but I could be mistaken. I'll agree with you that it is very cryptic and vaguely-worded."
