Does Anybody Have Some Recommendations for Commentaries on the Gospel of John?
I don't really know where I would post something like this, but does anybody have any commentaries on the Gospel of John that they feel are in-depth and scholarly? Thank you.

I have Malina and Rohrbaugh's Social Science Commentary on the Gospel of John.
I haven't read it, but they are well-respected scholars on the subject.COGITO ERGO CHICO AND ZEPPO~ from Tonio K's website.

Re: Does Anybody Have Some Recommendations for Commentaries on the Gospel of John?
If you're going for just general information about the gospel, I can't help but recommend my favorite commentary series, the New Interpreter's Bible. I like it because it's both up to date with contemporary scholarship, and written to help bring out the gospel's usefulness for the church. Too many commentaries today focus on one to the exclusion of the other IMO. One one hand, the Anchor Bible series is far too heavily oriented toward critical scholarship with little concern for the life of the believing community. On the other, many commentary series are so church-focused that they ignore the key critical questions and contextual issues raised by the biblical text. In my opinion, the NIB does an outstanding job of balancing informed, scholarly research with a keen eye toward how the Scriptures should be used by the people of God, for educational as well as worshipful purposes.

By the way, why is this thread in the Locker Room? Want me to move it to the Study Room or something? If there is anything I’ve learned from both conservatives and liberals, it’s that we can have all the “right” answers and still be mean. And when you’re mean, it’s hard for people to listen to, much less desire, your truth.

Hey, that looks great! Thanks for the recommendation. Sure, move it to the study room if you wish.

I use William Barclay's Daily Study Bible commentary set. They are available at christianbook.com.

I ordered Andrew Lincoln's commentary on John a week or so ago and I am waiting for it to arrive from Christianbook. It has had good reviews. Once it comes I shall road test it and put in some further comment.

You can try a few I use on the web right here. Just type in the verse you are looking for and click 'Include study tools' and you'll get all kinds of commentaries. My favorate one there is Matthew Henry Complete... hope this helps.

I second that vote. Very scholarly yet also includes a lot of the helpfull application notes useful for the church as Rando was talking about. Witherington files them under the heading of "Bridging the Horizons", which are at the end of each section of this commentary.

Re: Does Anybody Have Some Recommendations for Commentaries on the Gospel of John?
Commentaries are good at providing a basic starting point.
But on some things, they are woefully inadequate. A good example of the failure of most popular 'modern' commentaries is how they handle John 7:53-8:11. They almost invariably provide but a few sentences on the party-line of liberal textual critics like Bruce Metzger.
But if you want a proper in-depth look at the full evidence regarding the authenticity of John 8:1-11, you'll have to turn to an online resource, like our website dedicated to John 8:1-11 here:
