Re: Does Anybody Have Some Recommendations for Commentaries on the Gospel of John?
Hi, I also recommend William Barclay's Daily Study Bible. But don't buy them brand new, go to ebay for great prices. I like the revised addition best.

Re: Does Anybody Have Some Recommendations for Commentaries on the Gospel of John?
John MacArthur has a commentary on the gospel of John, chapters 1-11 that I would check out.
He is one the best Bible teachers I've ever heard and it can be found on the Grace to You website, gty.org
Hope this helps.Love the truth; follow it no matter where it leads; embrace it no matter how much it costs; accept no substitutes; and be satisfied with nothing less than the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the Perfect Embodiment of the Truth; Love and follow Him!
"Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me." (John 14:6)

Also, here's a freebie by Dr. Thomas Constable at this website. It's in PDF format:
http://www.soniclight.com/constable/notes/pdf/john.pdf
This covers about 338 pages so I would think it would be very comprehensive. "Notes on John, 2005 Edition" . I've enjoyed referring to Dr. Constable's work for my Bible studies and Sunday School preparation.
May God bless your study

Re: Does Anybody Have Some Recommendations for Commentaries on the Gospel of John?
Yes, my strong recommendation is to stay away from all commentaries and words of other fallible men. Rely only on what the Scriptures and the Ruach (Spirit) supply. That was sufficient for all believers who lived before the spinmeisters, theological cemeteries (sorry, I couldn't resist) and doctrinal gurus took hold of the reigns.

"If God has given [his people] such joy now, joy in their faith, in their hope, in love, in the truth of his scriptures, what kind of joy is he preparing for them at the end? If he feeds them like this on the journey, how will he feast them in their homeland?"--Augustine of Hippo
"It cannot be that the people should grow in grace unless they give themselves to reading. A reading people will always be a knowing people."--John Wesley

Wisdom and knowledge is of the Most High. And by demonstrating your obvious fluency in the English language, you hope to convince me of what?

Re: Does Anybody Have Some Recommendations for Commentaries on the Gospel of John?
I present the point that you disparage many of the highly important benefits yielded by commentaries. For example, they can frequently supply background knowledge that would have been held in common by the original audience and author of a book of Scripture--things that we have often lost. When was the last time the Spirit of God taught you about agonistic cultures, client-patron relationships, and other facets of daily life that would have served as the background upon which the portrait of the New Testament was painted?

Re: Does Anybody Have Some Recommendations for Commentaries on the Gospel of John?
It may be the pass time of some to read commentaries and men's other writings, perhaps to see how other people believe, but to rely on them for doctrine as Christians and other so-called Bible believers have for so long instead of simply depending on the Ruach ha Chodesh (Holy Spirit) for a proper understanding is foolishness.
Men are faulty and are easily led astray. HaSatan knows this and therefore uses and capitalizes on a plethora of well-known and trusted Christian writers and teachers to maintain ancient Christian errors as well as to invent knew ones.

Someone’s already mentioned Barclay’s and MacArthur’s – both are good. I also recommend Commentary on the New Testament: The Interpretation of St. John’s Gospel by R.C.H. Lenski, The New International Commentary on the New Testament: The Gospel According to John, Revised by Leon Morris, The Gospel & Epistles of John by F.F. Bruce, and New Testament Commentary: Exposition of the Gospel According to John by William Hendriksen.
